American Beauty-completely uninvoving and pretentious crapfest. Chicago was bad too, but was ultimately too forgettable to be worth voting for, and while 2001 was a coma-inducingly dull experience for me, I can unnderstand why others find it fascinating

Oh no, no, no!!!

Brilliant film. Although almost cetainly more of a guy film

I still stand by what I said, American Beauty started the trend of pretentious filmmaking with pointless close-ups.

Nah, pretentious film making was invented long before 1999.

Ever seen the considerable borefest known as E.T.?

Anyway, from this list I've gone with A Beautiful Mind.

Not terrible, but instantly forgettable and an emotional non-entitity.

Moonstruck, I can't stand that movie! It's like fingernails scratching a blackboard! Worst Nicolas Cage movie EVER! Yes, even worse than The Wicker Man. I'd gladly watch The Wicker Man again than watching this movie again! THAT's how much I hate it!

Moonstruck was overrated, but it's nowhere NEAR as godawful as Knowing.

I chose Gump (nowhere near bad. But not the best film of that year. A consensus that I think much of the public agrees on) A Beautiful Mind (bleh) and the most overrated of all-time, Gone With The Wind.

A few thoughts on the other nominees.

Easy Rider is more regarded today for being historically significant than for being a great work of cinema. It's good albeit dated although it has aged better than The Graduate.

American Beauty. I think a consensus has arisen that that one may have been a tad overpraised in its original release. But I don't think a backlash has arisen much the same way one rose against Crash.

Good Will Hunting I've always been up and down on. Loved it at one point, found it to be interminably overpraised at one poiint and today like it but find it to still be overpraised. It's a lot more conventional than many people realize.

Mystic River and Nashville have both earned their status. Recently I re-watched Mystic and discovered that I still consider it a **** film. Coming up on the ten year minimum I think it's safe to say that Eastwood's film earns its status as a new classic.
