Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
I voted for Pulp Fiction as his second best because I think Inglourious Basterds is his best. The war film is a bit more substantial, while PF is the endlessly quotable, hilarious faux art film. Basterds combines entertainment, high-brow cinema, and low-brow cinema better than anything I've ever seen.

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
So the shelves are up. Not too much damage to the walls...
So, for me, his second best film, behind The Pulp, is Inglourious Basterds. I love the first because it is endlessly quotable and a hilarious faux art film. I probably love it the most because it was THE film that opened the eyes of this naive film watcher to what cinema could do. Call it my cherry popper.
Although...the raw freshness of Reservoir Dogs will always have a place in my heart.

I definitely agree with this. Pulp Fiction will always be counted by me as among my favorite films for these very reasons. It's just so fucking cool.

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
I have:
1. Inglorious Basterds 2. Reservoir Dogs 3. Pulp Fiction (It is good, but I thought it was a bit full of itself. Maybe my expectations were too high.)
big gap
4. Kill Bill, vol. 2 5. Kill Bill, vol. 1
haven't seen Death Proof or Jackie Brown

Hey Chad--Welcome to the forums. Don't bother with Jackie Brown

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
I voted for Pulp Fiction before noticing that the poll is for his second-best film. His second-best film is Inglorious Basterds by process of elimination. Every other Tarantino movie I've seen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill vols 1 and 2, Death Proof) has been mediocre-to-awful. Death Proof was the worst out of the bunch with Kill Bill close behind. Reservoir dogs had some nice dialogue but it seemed like a b-movie version of Pulp Fiction.

You could say that. I can't help but see Pulp Fiction as a large heaping of hyper-stylized, clever trash, totally devoid of feelings.

I think it's Inglourious Basterds, but other people will say that I'm voting for his third best film Kill Bill, Volume 2.

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
My Ranking:
1) Inglorious Bastards 2) Pulp Fiction 3) Kill Bill Volume1 and 2 (I said before that these movies didn't impress me the first time I saw them, but subsequent viewings only increased my appreciation. They're fun and nicely textured works of pop art) 4) Reservoir Dogs (would probably rate higher, except I really do not like scenes of people being tortured) 5) Deathproof (not awful by any means, but rather unimpressive by any reasonable standards)
Have never seen Jackie Brown. -Jeremy

You're really not missing much with Jackie Brown--it's his only film that hasn't impressed me at all.

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
My choice isn't on there: His CSI tv movie!!!
No, no, kidding. Pulp Fiction gets my vote. It's one of the best American films ever made, but you now what? Inglorious Basterds just may be his masterpiece. And I always considered Kill Bill as one film, since it's how he always intended it. That one would clock in at three, followed by Jackie Brown.
Hell, the only film by Tarantino I didn't think was a classic was probably Death Proof, and that one was still pretty goddamn good.

Did you include a sly allusion to the final line of Inglourious Basterds in there?

Indeed, sir. Though I didn't realize I was being subtle/sly.

I'll take it! In any case, I'm seriously excited for any new Tarantino movie coming out after considering his batting average... Especially when the title is "Django Unchained."

Re: New Regime Poll #8: Tarantino's 2nd-best film
My reaction to Pulp Fiction wasn't quite as strong, but I also didn't get why it was so lauded. I didn't see it till a few years after it had been released, though, so the high expectations could have been a contributor to feeling underwhelmed by it. The Tarantino movie that I have liked the most is actually one that's often considered a minor work - Jackie Brown. Sure, the runtime could do with some trimming, but I had a good time. Haven't seen Death Proof or Basterds yet, though.

I voted for Inglourious Basterds. PF is still the tops for me, but IB was a tremendous return to form for QT. Tops of the year for 2009.
