Never read a comic book so I can't speak for the adaptation authenticity of these two:

Superman
Sin City

They're the closest to feeling what I can only imagine a comic book is like.

(as in: captures the nature of a comic book the best)
1. Sin City
2. 300
2. The Hulk (Ang Lee's film)

Favourite adaptation of a specific comic book
1. Akira
2. Sin City
3. Ghost in the Shell
(Not having read Road to Perdition and A History of Violence, I can't compare the source material to the film adaptation)

Favourite superhero movie based on comic book characters
1. X-Men
2. X2: X-Men United
3. The Dark Knight

Superman: The Movie. Hands down.

I don't think there will ever be a comic book movie to top this one in my book. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Great characters, humor, a feeling of epic-ness...I don't don't know, there was just something magical about this movie.

You can keep your Dark Knight and Spider-Man, give me Christopher Reeve as Superman and I'm a happy camper.

Is Darkman an adaptation or an original creation? If it's an adaptation then I'll definitely add that to my list. I LOVE it!

I think Darkman was an original screenplay by Sam Raimi, but it sure has the look of a comic book adaptation.

I agree. Awesome movie!

Nice to see the Rocketeer make the list. :D

I highly recommend the animateed Spiderman from 2003. This was meant as sort of a bridge between the two films and takes a mature adult tone with grown up storylines. Aside from that, The Punisher game is by far the best adaption of the license, especially when it gives hints on Frank Castle (through the flashbacks and some of the in game comics).

My top "favourites" are:

1) The Avengers 3D: Loved the banter and humour among the superheroes, the heroics were good too and finally it was an excellent 3D conversion.
2) Batman (1989): Underrated by many, Batman had the perfect combination of dark and fun :-)
3) Dredd 3D: The more I see this it the more I appreciate it. I think that it will be like Blade Runner which bombed in the box office but in time turned into a cult film
4) Dark Knight, The : Probably I would have appreciated more a bit shorter. Heath Ledger as a Joker performance blew my mind though
5) Spider man 2 : Fan of the character since I was a child, I picked the best of all the films shown so far

Cheers

Superman
Ghost World
Batman Begins
Hellboy
Spiderman 2
Iron Man
Watchmen
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
American Splendor
Batman Returns
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Not counting manga, since I'm not always sure of the relationship between the magazines and movies--they often seem to go in tandem--although Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Akira have to count.
