Re: The Second Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
First: another big "thank you" to Pedro. I genuinely appreciate the effort you've put into this again.
6 Nominations doesn't feel like giving it the finger. I think we've corrected the excess love given by the Academy. Of course, I haven't even seen this yet.
I know that was all in jest James, but I still liked the inclusion of The Girlfriend Experience last year even if I didn't nominate it.
I know you're joking about the moderators too but I'll briefly add that while Trevor was here he was the most active moderator in terms of keeping things on topic, merging threads etc. Those decisions weren't always popular but they needed to be made. Also, when I'd complain publicly he was nice enough to PM me explaining the theory behind his decisions.
Of course, I'll always remember the effort Pat put into repairing the defaced Great Movies section. That had to be gruelling, but he did it quietly and efficiently.
Now, we all like to complain about the Oscar Nominees so I'm sure no-one will mind if I complain about our nominees.
For folks who bitch about the Oscar choices, we've sure gone and come up with a bunch of nominees that look pretty darn similar!
Sweet. Both made my shortlist and were late scratches but I'm still glad that you've recognised them. Certainly deserved.
My #1 choice for actor was Mads Mikkelsen (Valhalla Rising) but I'm not too crushed since many folks didn't see that one. However, no Pierce Brosnan (The Ghost Writer)? I thought he was the best thing in that film! Doubly surprising since The Ghost Writer did better than I thought it would.
Had both Tilda Swinton
(I Am Love) and Rebecca Hall
(Please Give) among my Best Actress nominees but I suppose those movies weren't the most widely seen.
Closest I've ever felt to being impotent. I didn't nominate even one of these lovely ladies. My ballot looked something like this:Best Actress in a Supporting Role
1. Greta Gerwig (Greenberg)
2. Mia Wasikowska (The Kids Are All Right)
3. Catherine Keener (Please Give)
4. Mary Tsoni (Dogtooth)
5. Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom)
Say what? Who saw this? I'm not doubting anyone, it's just that I've still to hear a single opinion about this on Reelviews and I'm really looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say about it. Some critics really seemed to hate it so I'm wondering if it's actually a dud.
You know what disappointed me the most? No Best Music for TRON: Legacy
??? Seriously? I wasn't the only one on these boards to complain about the Academy omitting it, so some guys either forgot about it or just didn't submit a ballot. It deserves a nomination for Art Direction too, but snubbing its soundtrack is a fucking sin.
I had hoped for some love for Four Lions
(Postman? MunichMan?) and the exquisite Costume Design/Cinematography of I Am Love
(Ebert Presents had a great clip on the impact of I Am Love's costume decisions in establishing rapport between characters
) but I can deal with that.
But the TRON soundtrack? Damn, guys.
