Post Favorite Movies of the 2000s
Now that the ten-year period from 2000-2009 is in its final year, we're only months away from "Greatest Movies of the Decade" lists popping up everywhere. So let's get a head start. What movies are on your list of 10 favorite movies of what popularly will be called the "decade"? Also, I know this is an impossible question, but which movies of 2009 do you anticipate might have a shot at breaking into your list?

My list:
1. Children of Men (2006) - I agree with Dana Stevens' admittedly hyperbolic statement that this is the "movie of the millenium." Over the years I think this movie will become a classic even more than Blade Runner has.
2. Master and Commander (2003) - I love this movie so much that it drove me to go out and read the 20 books it's based on.
3. Almost Famous (2000) - I saw this movie for the first time in 2001 when I was 18, and I agree with Roger Ebert that it's ridiculous that a movie so perfect for teenagers is rated R--fleeting breasts and curse words notwithstanding.
4. The Dark Knight (2008) - Last night it was hard to get into the Oscars when the three best movies I saw last year--The Dark Knight, Doubt, and WALL-E--were all left out of the Best Picture category. And The Dark Knight was so clearly the best movie out of even that group that it baffles me how it was left out.
5. Michael Clayton (2007) - It's probably not good that I'm in law school and love a movie about a disillusioned lawyer so much, but I just love how this movie manages to make an honest to God thriller incredibly, unsettlingly plausible.
6. Return of the King (2003) - The greatest of the Lords of the Ring even despite the ending. I figure a 9 hour movie has earned 20 minutes or so to say goodbye.
7. The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - Recently I've found this to be the most rewatchable of the series, but it's a little more of a one trick pony than the third one.
8. Serenity (2005) - I saw this before I ever watched the TV show and I was still completely sucked into the universe.
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - My favorite of all the Charlie Kaufman movies. His other movies I've seen don't really know how to end. This is the most fully realized of his scripts, and that results in the best movie.
10. Memento (2001) - There's probably half a dozen other movies that could sit in this spot, and I don't even watch Memento very often, but I have incredibly fond memories of watching it the first time with my brother and trying to figure out what the fuck was happening as the movie unfurled.

Of the 2009 movies I've seen previews of, Watchmen, Harry Potter 6, and Public Enemies seem most down my alley.

I'll form a whole list eventually, but I just had to add a note of agreement on this one.
I wrote my senior thesis arguing that Children of Men is the Blade Runner for the 21st century.

Post Re: Favorite Movies of the 2000s
As films from this decade appear in my Top 100. I think that is a pretty good overview of the decade for 11 films, and those are easily the films from this decade that I have the easiest time getting engaged in. 'Requiem For A Dream' once approached the list, but has since fallen out of even the runner-up list. I feel the film will be a relic of it's time as it has aged very very badly, and it isn't even that interesting until the final half hour, which is significant being that I could barely walk out of the room the first time I saw it.

11. Talk To Her (2002)
10. Battle Royale (2000)
9. The Departed (2006)
8. No Country For Old Men (2007)
7. Finding Nemo (2003)
6. In The Mood For Love (2001)
5. The Dark Knight (2008)
4. The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (2001-3)
3. City Of God (20002)
2. Memento (2001)
1. YiYi (2000)

It was ignored by mainstream audiences, reviled by film critics and it's cast, and has influenced hundreds of films in the science fiction genre since it's release?

And as it stands right now I don't see any 2009 films making it into even the top 15. There are some out there that look good (Watchmen, Transformers 2, Star Trek), but I don't know if they're top 15 worthy.

Post Re: Favorite Movies of the 2000s
Well, never to early to start thinking about this....I'm putting 20 films here, in no particular order with the thought that I'll be able to cut it in half by year's end.

The Dark Knight-A truly remarkable film that adeptly combined the crime drama and the comic book film
No Country for Old Men-The Coens mastery continues to amaze me.
There Will Be Blood-Daniel Day Lewis can sit in a chair staring at a wall and I would pay to see it. Our greatest actor.
Children of Men-The next great Sci-Fi film.
Before Sunset-Picking up with Jesse and Celine 10 years later. Was worth the wait.
Closer-Wanna see a feel good romance? Then go see something else cause this film will punch you in the face.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-Kate Winslet in all her glory. Jim Carrey not being rubberface. Brilliant writing.
City of God-My favorite foreign film of the decade. Just fascinating.
Adaptation-Great acting, crazy concept. Well worth trying to keep up.
Gangs of NY-Scorcese. Day-Lewis. Dicaprio. Wow. Bill the Butcher may be may favorite character of the decade.
Royal Tenenbaums-Anderson at his finest with all kinds of talent to work with.
High Fidelity-Loved the book. Enjoyed the film nearly as much.
Memento-Who's jaw didn't drop in amazement when they first watched this?
Lost in Translation-Sweet tale of two people longing for something different and trying to avoid loneliness.
Shaun of the Dead-My favorite comedy of the decade. Just so much fun.
Lord of the Rings Trilogy-This generation's Star Wars.
Once-The sparsest, simplest tale of two people's flirtation.
Sideways-Welcome to the big show Mr. Giamatti, you're time had finally come.
Love Actually-I can't help it, I'm a sucker for this one.
American Psycho-The best adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis novel.

So there you have my top 20. Some great films, others I just enjoy immensely.

It is strange how perspective changes as we look back. I'd not done this recently.

2000 - Unbreakable
2001 - In The Bedroom
2002 - Minority Report
2003 - Fog Of War
2004 - Moolaade
2005 - Grizzly Man
2006 - 49 Up
2007 - Into The Wild
2008 - Wall-E

I'm surprised to find 3 documentaries in this list.

Moolaade will not have been seen by many - yet it's a true great that will make you laugh and cry in the same 100 minutes

If forced to pick, I would nominate City of God, Amelie, The Departed, No Country for Old Men, Traffic, Requiem for a Dream, Almost Famous, Munich, Gladiator, Hard Candy, Juno, High Fidelity and perhaps The Dark Knight for starters. I guess that I tend to be more partial to the 90's since those were my formative years and since I consider the 90's to have been a better decade for film.

No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Wall-E
Catch Me If You Can
Traffic
Minority Report
The Bourne Supremacy (sue me)
Almost Famous
A Scanner Darkly
Kill Bill Vol. 2

Actually, this list is a pretty fair representation of my tastes as a whole.

Heh yes, I am predicting that its realistic style will take hold in science fiction as more and more sci-fi looks at the very near future and issues that plague the world right now.

Lord of the Rings - counting all the films as one
American Psycho
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Mulholland Dr
Memento
Layer Cake
A Scanner Darkly
The Door in the Floor
The Darjeeling Limited
The Black Dahlia - this one seems to be widely hated. I like Ellroy's novel, though, and generally like De Palma's movies, so for me it made a good companion piece to LA Confidential. YMMV.

In looking over the list, I've realised that many of these are based on books I've read and enjoyed.

The Lord of the Rings
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Road to Perdition
Mystic River
The 40 Year Old Virgin
The Dark Knight
City of God
Memento
Match Point

All totally off the top of my head and in no specific order.

I can't remember a movie I really hated more than this one in theaters(other than The Happening but that's on a whole other level). I read the novel too and was really looking forward to it with the talent attached. I just thought the acting was stiff and the story not well adapted. I was very disappointed.

I know that's been the reaction of many Ellroy fans (not to mention filmgoers in general), so when I first saw the movie after hearing the bad press I was surprised at how much I liked it. I can only chalk it up to different viewer responses - sometimes I've found highly-praised films underwhelming, and other times I've liked some much-loathed films.

I'll be curious to see what happens with the White Jazz adaptation, if it gets off the ground...
