Re: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED
This film is a very low key, very strongly acted thriller. I agree with most of what James said, and while I too feel that the ending is anticlimactic: James, When you mentioned that the director was a hair from doing something memorable, I get you... But that girl did not deserve to be left for dead. I think the reason the director didn't do it is because that particular ending (while obviously not being a crowd pleaser) would have seemed like she was being killed just for the sole purpose of one last twist

Currently, this film is playing in 2 theaters, both in Canada. On Friday, it opens.... in 2 more theaters... in California. (data from moviefone.com) I'm not sure I would even call this "select"

It's playing on one screen here in the Bay Area
British critic Mark Kermode loved the first 20 minutes, liked the acting from the 3 leads and admired the screenplay. He also agreed with James on the conclusion.
I hope it's here next week. As I'm camping for 4 days from tomorrow. Rob

An addendum to the review: whatever you do DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER TO THIS MOVIE. I believe I watched about a minute out of curiosity and stopped watching after one of the twists was revealed. These days I try to avoid trailers as much as possible.

I saw this at TIFF as well last year, and really enjoyed it. I know its playing here in Toronto in theatres now, hopefully it gets a wider distribution, because it is well worth a ticket.

Re: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED
Regardless of my disagreement with James about "Devil," I saw this movie last night on-demand and found it to be a truly suspenseful hostage drama. This is probably the claustrophobic movie to see this week.

Re: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED
Because there are only three characters, I thought that the film must be based on a play. Not so, however that doesn't detract from the fact that this is well-acted thriller with a couple of bold twists. Ever since "Happy-Go-Lucky", I've enjoyed seeing Marsan, he's excellent.

Re: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED
This is why I read this site. I had never heard of this movie before reading JB's review, but it sounded interesting. So I put it on my Netflix list, and it took forever to percolate up to the top. I was rewarded with an exciting, tense low budget thriller, with several interesting plot twists. Gemma Arterton puts in a great performance that I would not have predicted. As JB says, the movie derails in the last 15 minutes when the plot turns silly and far-fetched. But it still beats most $200 million superhero movies.
