Hello to everyone!

I'm Ernesto, I'm 26, I currently live in Lima, Peru. I'm a journalist with a passion for writing and, of course, movies. I write for a local film magazine here for the past four years, I love it, though it's more like a hobby. I started writing reviews back in 2001, for a newspaper I used to work at when I was studying in Chile (First review I ever wrote was the first Harry Potter film). I have a blog about movies, if anyone here knows Spanish you can check it out: http://necofobia.blogspot.com.

I also write short stories, articles, and whatnot, I've got a novel I've been working on for the past year, hopefully it'll be finished soon. I hope to be a writer in the future, I applied for a Postgraduate Program in Creative Writing in Australia, still waiting to see how that pans out, so hopefully if all goes well I'll be living in Melbourne by the end of the year.

What else? I'm not really into sports at all, I listen to a lot of rock and metal... and that's about it!

Hello all! I'm glad to have registered to the Forum this weekend - finally a community of fellow film geeks interested in thoughtful discussion! I've been an avid Berardaphile (yes, coining that term! And no, I don't mean to come across as 'creepy' here) for the last 3 or so years, browsing on average 4 times a week. I'm 22, attend community college, and am in the process of transferring (Ideally UC Berkeley). I'm an English major (Communications minor) that aspires to write in the capacity of either playwright or essayist - clearly I have delusions of a lucrative career here! I work at a little-known 2 screen cinema in a small town as it's assistant manager (oh, the stories I could tell), and earn a little extra cash doing family pencil portraits, and some minor video productions with my company (now called Recession Proof Films).

Wrapping things up...

-I couldn't possibly quantify a list of my favorite films of all time, simply too much to consider. However, I'm an unabashed James Bond Nutcase, and among my favorite directors working today are Paul Thomas Anderson & Darren Arronosky.

-Literary: My favorite author is hands down Thomas Pynchon, closely followed by Franz Kafka. Playwrights: Tom Stoppard (Fav.), and Beckett.

-Brevity, clearly, isn't my thing! But I'm working on it.

Hi everyone!

My name is Dean and I've been following James's Reel Views for several years now. I'm looking forward to checking in on occasion as I very much enjoy movies and my wife, God love her, though a movie fan, doesn't take to watching with a critical eye. So I figure these forums would be the place to have such discussions. ;)

I'm 46 and live in South Florida with my aforementioned wife and three kids, one of whom graduates from High School this year. The other two are still in elementary.

My full time job is as a TV Broadcast Engineer for a television station but I also do a fair amount of freelance work as a media developer (video, websites, interactive DVD's, etc.). Mostly corporate stuff but about 10 years ago I co-produced a full length feature that frankly, was more fun to make than enjoyable to watch (though that might be that I am too close to the project as I have had several friends tell me that they enjoyed the kitsch factor - particularly after a few drinks!).

That's about it on me. Congratulations James on your new forums. I hope all goes smoothly and I look forward to chatting cinema with you all.

Hey everyone,
My name is Jo (I am male even though there is no 'e' at the end of my name) and I live in Brisbane, Australia. I am 29 years old and have two subjects to go until I finish my Bachelor of Information Systems degree after years of mucking around trying to find something I like.
I have always watched movies, but really got into it around 1998-1999 and have been a regular visitor to this site since then.
Other than movies, I love football/soccer and religiously follow Liverpool FC. Also I read alot of books (mainly sci-fi and horror) and Spider-Man comics (I am only missing 35 issues... of course they are the rare, expensive ones) since 1988.
In July I will be moving to Vancouver for 1 or 2 years, but I will be exploring the US for 2.5 months before.
My favourite movie is Patton (like James), a movie my dad got me into when I was very young.
I guess that's enough for now!
Jo

Thomas L Here. I'm a med student at Indiana University. Don't have much of a life asides from that - but movies (and James' reviews) have been the core bread-and-butter on the occasional days I get free time. That, and Star Trek+BSG.

I've been following Reelviews for 10 years or so. Crazy to think about how time has flown since.

Cya later!

Hello people,

My name is Nick i'm 27 and from Australia, I live approx 1hr from Sydney and have been into film for as long as I can remember. Growing up my brother and I had what was probably an unhealthy love of 80's/early 90's action movies and from there I eventually branched out and started to discover and develop a passion for everything in the medium. Ever since the later part of the 90's i've been reading reviews online because in Australia we generally get the releases a couple months down the road unless its a major blockbuster or from the UK. Probably discovered James' reviews around 2000 or so and have been reading it multiple times a week ever since, it was the writing style and his taste in film that kept me reading and while i'll disagree with some of the reviews (both positive and negative) the reasons are always clear and well written.

As for other things than film i'm a bit of a gamer even though it is mostly limited to the 360 these days and I really dig a good TV show which is getting harder to find these days, favorites include The Office, The Wire, Sopranos, Dexter, It's Always Sunny in Philly, BSG, Deadwood, Arrested Development and Firefly (i'm not a Whedon fan by any means but I love this one).

This forum was the best thing to happen for Reelviews since it finally gives us the chance to interact with the other people who are regulars and to see James get in on some of the dicussions of his reviews etc. I can't tell you the amount of times I had half typed emails to him only to delete them because it felt like I was wasting his time. Looking forward to watching this community build up. See you around guys.

Hello,

just noticed this topic, so here's my belated introduction.

I'm Oliver I'm a regular reader of Reelviews since 2002.

My taste in films is very varied, but I'm particularly fond of classic films noirs, Hitchcock, sci-fi and anything which is set in a jungle.

Hello, I'm Pelle from Stockholm. I've been reading James' stuff since his very first post on rec.arts.movies. I usually agree with his views and he's my most trusted source of movie reviews. Thank you, James!

Jeff, live in Iowa. 37 years old, feel half that old (or twice, depending on the day). Work at a bank, but am not nearly that boring.

Been reading Reelviews for about 10 years, mainly because I enjoy JB's writing. I don't see many movies as I would like, unfortunately. Big on sci-fi, anime, and cinemax soft-core porn. The perfect movie would have elements of all three. Alas, I can only dream.

Hobbies, playing poker, working out, and chasing my 3 year-old son around the house.

Truthfully, I look forward to discussing movies and life with you all.

Hello film buffs,

My name is Nicoletta and I am 46 years old. I grew up in Chicago where I studied computer science. I am an independently employed consultant for banking software. For the past 15 years I have been traveling the globe for work and I have lived in several countries including Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Portugal, Slovakia and currently for the last 7 years in Milan, Italy. I have been an avid reader of James' web site for 2 years now and he has become my favorite reviewer.

I am very pleased to see that the others of James' fans are also witty, intelligent and articulate and I look forward to discussions and debates on this forum with you all. One of the disadvantages of living in Italy is that all foreign films here are dubbed, which of course means all American films as well. I have to look for that rare occasion to see an original-language film or else am stuck with DVDs, as you might imagine I have a rather large collection of DVDs. On the plus side it is much easier to get a hold of European films here.

The last film I saw was on my DVD player this afternoon, '3:10 to Yuma', and it was great.

ciao for now,
nicoletta

I'm Wallis. I'm a 41-year old married man with three kids in Houston. I'm essentially a contemporary of Berardinelli (down to having a killer headache during Star Trek III), with one critical difference: I am a lawyer, which means that I'm one step up from Cambrian Era-glop in Mr. Berardinelli's eyes.

I grew up living for science fiction, discovered fantasy in law school, and now ping-pong between sci-fi/fantasy, history, and thrillers in my reading.

As far as movies, I was the classic action/science fiction fan until about fifteen years ago, when I realized that most films in those genres sucked. Now, I just like "good" movies (although a great sci fi/action film is usually better than a great drama).

Hey, my name is Joe and I live in Philly, home of the WORLD CHAMPION PHILLIES! I am 32 years old and have been a film fan since I can remember. I go to the movies weekly(occasionally several times) and have built up quite the home collection as well. I have a seven year old daughter who is starting to really enjoy movies(I've been taking her for a few years now) which is fun to see. That is especially because she picks to go to Coraline over Hotel for Dogs. Haha. My favorites tend to be straight dramas or quirky comedies. I'm also an avid reader(with a degree in English and all) and sports fan. I've been reading James' reviews for a few years now and his site has been my go to one for almost as long. I've never posted to a forum like this before but when I saw he was starting one on his site I figured now's as good a time as any given how much I enjoy the site. Looking forward to sharing thoughts with everyone here.

I'm Kelvin from New Jersey. I only started seriously watching movies maybe a year ago, but I was born ready. It started with just a casual viewing of 1408 which had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. After that, I read Lord of the Flies and decided to check out Apoclypse Now. Then I watched The Thing, Commando, Hot Fuzz and haven't looked back since.

Hello everybody, I'm Brian, 24, studying Economics in Leeds, UK. The movie which really made me become an avid film fan, was "Memento". I remember picking up a copy, when I was about 15, and after watching it, I sat in a stunned silence at what I had just witnessed. That was the movie that really drew me in, and now I probably on average watch around 3-4 movies a week. I've been coming to Reelviews for around 8 years, I really enjoy the site. My favourite genre of movie, well, I don't think you can beat a good drama, I often find the more depressing the material, can often mean a more powerful viewer experience. For example, "The War Zone" I didn't enjoy the film in a convential way, but I found the movie to be immensely powerful. I'm a fan of World Cinema, a good action flick, and of course a funny comedy.

Hey everyone,

My name is Olaolu Afolayan (that is Ola-olu Af-o-lion, more or less), I'm nearly 26 years old still trying to wrap up my Bachelor's in Civil Engineering. There is so much I could tell you about me but being that this is a movie site, I'll stick to discussing myself in terms of that. Basically, the first movie I remember falling in love with was Home Alone. Around this age, I started to dream of one day making it big in the film business (a dream that I've clearly not fully let go of just yet). Growing up, I wasn't really allowed to start developing my tastes in movies until I left the house and move out on my own, but movies has always interested me. I found this site around 2002 and I was immediately taken in by Mr. Bernardelli's writing style and his in-depth knowledge of films both newer and older as well as mainstream vs. more obscure stuff. There is so much more I could say but instead of that, I'll just leave you all with a list of my current top five films from highest to lowest:

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
L.a. Confidential
City of God
Three Kings

Wanna know anything else, ask me. By the way, good call on The War Zone, samptime. Another film that I would put into that category would be Requiem for a Dream.

Name's Neil, I work in Seattle, WA. I'm the guy everyone goes to for recommendations on movies within my circle of friends and family. I have a job that allows me to lurk on the forums here all day.

I'm a fan of what my fiancee calls "boring movies"...in other words, dramas, although I do like the mainstream and campy stuff, too. I live and breathe movies and have been told that I relate too many things to films.

Some of my favorite movies include:

Fight Club
Jaws
There Will Be Blood
Network
JFK
The Big Lebowski
Seven
The Godfather
Wall-E
Waking Life

Greetings to anyone and everyone!

My name is Micah. I'm 28 years old and have recently moved to the Scranton, PA area. I've also spent time in the Chicago burbs but my heart is in my home state of Michigan. JB has been my favorite critic since 2003.

When it comes to film I like a bit of everything. I enjoy great films and trash films alike. Off the top of my head some of my all time favorites include:

Robocop, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Back to the Future, The Great Dictator, Goodfellas, Amelie, Raging Bull, The Monster Squad, To Live and Die in L.A., Ken Burns's Baseball...I could go on and on.

Aside from watching movies I read a lot of books. My handle is the name of a character appearing in James Ellroy novels.

I also enjoy sports. I support these teams:

Detroit Tigers, Lions and Redwings, Wolverine football, Chicago Fire, USMNT, AFC Ajax and Rangers FC.

If you did rock n' roll music do yourself a favor and check out the King Khan & BBQ Show!

Look foward to discussion of all things JB and film with you all.
