Post Top 10 films of 2008
How was this not done already???

I saw about 55 movies that came out in '08, and there's only a few I didn't see that I think could crack the top 10 (Paranoid Park, Summer Palace, Che, Synecdoche, New York)

Close Calls: The Fall, In Bruges, The Wrestler, Doubt

10. Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind
9. Burn After Reading
8. WALL-E
7. Tropic Thunder
6. Frost/Nixon
5. Milk
4. Elegy
3. Reprise
2. Rachel Getting Married
1. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days

Mine's probably going to look like a who's who of popular hits but I don't get to see too many of the limited release films until their on dvd or tv. And there's a considerable gap between the first two choices and the rest of the list.

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E
3. Iron Man
4. Kung Fu Panda
5. Tropic Thunder
6. Gran Torino
7. The Express
8. Hellboy II
9. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
10. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The top three of my list seem to change every other day.

I'm not including 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days as a 2008 movie, but if it was on my list it'd probably be #1. I really loved it.

10. WALL-E
9. Frost/Nixon
8. Milk
7. Rachel Getting Married
6. The Wrestler
5. Revolutionary Road
4. Doubt
3. Let the Right One In
2. Waltz With Bashir
1. Man on Wire

Honorable Mentions: Wendy and Lucy, Happy-Go-Lucky, The Duchess (yes, The Duchess... I know i'm the only one)

I originally called it as a 2007 movie since many critics did, but it got its limited release in the U.S. in January of '08 and I didn't see it till then anyway. And I forgot Let the Right One In as one movie that I missed.

Nobody has seen Frozen Rover yet or thinks enough of it to include in the top 10?

I don't attend movie theaters anymore so I have a ways to go before I can come up with a list.

Hi there

I saw Frozen River and really wanted to like it alot. It does contain an outstanding central performance but I found myself quite detached. 2.5 stars for me.

Hi Shelobfan

Great list!

I loved the seemingly rarely seen no.8 on your list!
Blindness did not work in top ten mode for me.
Now we get to your no.2. I so wanted to love this movie and was there after 30 minutes , but ultimately I was unmoved and felt I'd been "manipulated"
Where is Wall-E?

Rob

You know Rob I should have done what you did and simply posted all the (38) films that got an 8/10 or higher for me in 2008 but since I'm low on time, I'll just post the rest of my Top 20 to answer your Wall-E question. :)

11. The Dark Knight (***1/2)
12. Slumdog Millionaire (***1/2)
13. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (***1/2)
14. The Happening (***)
15. The Secret Life of Bees (***)
16. Wall-E (***)
17. Man on Wire (***)
18. Under the Same Moon (***)
19. Kung Fu Panda (***)
20. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (***)

As far as Blindness is concerned, it is actually a really good preposterous film. Sure, the message is obvious, but Meirelles proves his skill in both the technical side of things (probably the best technical achievement of 2008) and the emotional side of things, at least for me. Of course I've already gone over how easily I fall in love with (obvious) thematic elements in film, so that should explain why I found its success in sending its important message as one of the most admirable accomplishments of 2008.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' placement in the list can be explained in much the same way as that of Blindness. One question... how could you feel unmoved? Sure, the Holocaust is a beaten dead horse of a subject, but this film looks at it through innocent and unknowing eyes which makes it that much more emotional and transcending. Making good, but not great Hollywood efforts like The Reader look well... ridiculous.

As long as we're staring to post out top twenties, I'll throw in mine with a revised top ten, plus commentary and ratings.

20. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (B+) - Forrest Gump 2 be damned.
19. Encounters at the End of the World (B+) - so weird, it's likable.
18. The Visitor (B+) - one of the best screenplays of the year and some of the best work I've seen Richard Jenkins do. Props to the rest of the case, too, though.
17. Milk (B+) - a very easy film to respect.
16. Frost/Nixon (B+) - see above.
15. Happy-Go-Lucky (B+) - Mike Leigh triumphs again.
14. Zack and Miri Make a Porno (B+) - so damn funny.
13. Iron Man (A-) - an unexpected delight.
12. Frozen River (A-) - Really beautiful, really moving, really well-acted.
11. Rachel Getting Married (A-) - I respect everything about this film and I love Anne Hathaway to death.
10. Gran Torino (A-) - I enjoyed this film way more than I should have.
9. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (A-) - so damn funny.
8. Man on Wire (A-) - the most beautiful documentary of the year. Petit's a great storyteller.
7. WALL-E (A-) - duh.
6. The Wrestler (A-) - this might place lower in the future - especially since I just saw L' Enfant - but you have to love Mickey Rourke.
5. Entre les muirs (A-) - an anti-Dead Poets Society, if you will.
4. Låt den rätte komma in (A-) - it works on almost every single level and works so damn well.
3. U2 3D (A) - it's kind of a masterpiece.
2. The Dark Knight (A) - it's the best superhero film I've seen by a long shot.
1. Slumdog Millionaire (A) - a weak A, but an A no less. I just loved it. It's one of those movies you fall in love with.
