James, have you read the eponymous books the "Girl" trilogy were based upon? I only ask because after enjoying them less than a year ago, I was quite interested in the movie adaptation, especially after your generous review. Having now seen the first movie, I can't agree with all the praise. The movie is plodding and boring. I could not even finish it and I usually stick with a movie, particularly well-regarded films.

A number of things could have reduced my enjoyment of the film. Other than Harry Potter and LotR I can't think of another movie offhand where I read the book before the movie and those two films had the benefit of spectacular visuals, so perhaps it's just my familiarity with source. But, I also think those movies did a much better job adapting, and not merely duplicating, than "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." I suspect it was also hurt by being a mystery novel (where the main draw is often solving the crime), but a real classic should be have more to sustain it than the ephemeral quality of novelty.

Anyways, the second and third movies should be more entertaining as they are more action-packed and typical of Hollywood thrillers.

James, have you seen The Kids Are All Right? It seems like one of the better reviewed films of the year.

edit: sorry, just noticed the review will be up later this week.

Having seen Fire, Hornets Nest and Dragon's Tattoo - it should be a procession for best films of the year.

Amazing!

I'm going to treat it as one film, but it will be in the Top 10, and probably very close to (if not in) the #1 position. Still have to wait to see whether there's some really good stuff coming during the autumn.

Can I assume "Inception" will make the Top 10 before the year is out?

Was hoping Green Zone would much higher on the list. But at least it's there. My Top 10 so far this year goes as follows:

1. Green Zone
2. The Ghost Writer
3. Shutter Island
4. Inception
5. Fireflies in the Garden
6. Knight and Day
7. Toy Story 3
8. Alice in Wonderland
9. The Book of Eli
10. Daybreakers

Still need to see The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Greenberg, The Eclipse, The Kids Are Alright, Get Low, Solitary Man, Ondine, Agora, Winter's Bone, Cyrus and other promising flicks.

01 – Inception (Nolan, 2010) **** out of **** (10/10)
02 – The Ghost Writer (Polanski, 2010) **** out of **** (10/10)
03 – The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (Six, 2010) *** ½ out of **** (8/10)
04 – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Oplev, 2010) *** ½ out of **** (8/10)
05 – Leaves of Grass (Nelson, 2010) *** ½ out of **** (8/10)
06 – How to Train Your Dragon (Sanders/DeBlois, 2010) *** ½ out of **** (8/10)
07 – Shutter Island (Scorsese, 2010) *** ½ out of **** (8/10)

Inception is the best film of the year thus far for me, smart and inventive. Nolan has quickly become a master director and this is one of his best films. The Ghost Writer is another masterful film by the Polanski, expertly directed and tightly written, a thriller in the vein of Michael Clayton. The Human Centipede is a brutal film, that taps way farther into things then it might deserve (much like another horror masterpiece, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), but does it excellently, it also happens to be very well directed.

There are three other 2010 releases that I don't really care about, so I left them off. I'm not sure where the line will end on my end of the year top ten, although I know the first three films will be on it.

Hi everyone

I've seen 84 movies released this year.

Top films all about the same grade are:

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Girl Who Played With Fire
Vincere
A Prophet
Inception
Kick Ass
City Island
Ghost Writer

Green Zone was a big disappointment as i love the director and star

Worst this year Cop Out and S&TC2 closely followed by Wolfman and Repo Men

Rob

and I have no idea why i have not seen Toy Story 3
