Sadly, the denizens of Reelviews have committed the same error as the Academy in awarding Avatar with Best Cinematography.

Cinematography is, essentially, the art of lighting and camerawork. While I won't deny the visual splendor of Avatar, cinematography had very little to do with it. Purely by definition, Avatar is eligible for the elements that were actually captured with a camera, but be honest. Are those the elements that people are taking into account here?

Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you.

Seconded. Pedro puts this beautiful thing together and you shit all over it for no reason.

No reason! It's a mess, all these photos stacked upon each other is visually unappealing and if someone has crappy internet than this would take forever to load! I may shit on things, but I do it for real reasons!

If it's any consolation, The White Ribbon was THIS close to winning.



And Patrick can shit all over what I did as much as he wants. If he wants to expend all of his energy on negativity, that's fine by me. I'm not offended.

Agreed, this is way more interesting than the actual Oscars. A few things happened that I did not expect, but in a good way.

I thought Pedro's presentation was pretty cool, BTW. Great Job. I wish I had been there for the voting and such.

Can't say I agree with a lot of the winners, but Rockwell getting best actor is awesome nonetheless.

I still fail to see how Avatar gets Best Cinematography. Avatar was a masterpiece of special effects, an effective argument against those who defended Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on the basis of effects, and it was excellent in both script and direction, but Cinematography? Definitely should have gone to either Basterds or Hurt Locker.

The winners for the most part are good I'd say. Sam Rockwell for Moon is spot on. I think Avatar for best cinematography is a little off. I'm guessing that the majority of people haven't seen The White Ribbon or they need glasses or something. It's easily the most breathtaking cinematography of 2009(and would possibly be in my favorite's as far as cinematography goes of the decade) in my opinion but that's just me...

I hope there's enough interest in a next year. I really enjoyed doing this, but keeping it real, this wasn't as successful as I hoped.

Without defending the Avatar/cinematography thing, maybe I can take a stab at why it won out. After watching several of the behind the scenes documentaries, James Cameron basically waved a camera around a room based on what he had going on in his head, and then they filmed actors and added environment based on what camera angles he had created. I thought this was pretty interesting, and its a different way of thinking about cinematography.

Or maybe it's just the 3D.

I think it was great for a first time effort in a new forum. As ReelViews continues to grow, we'll hopefully see this go from strength to strength.

That's not even close to cinematography. It would be like giving a photography award to somebody who drew pictures using photo references.

I guess there are plenty others out there with the same argument Ken. Is it cinematography? What is cinematography?
