THE BOOK OF ELI

Post Re: THE BOOK OF ELI
Saw this last night, VERY enjoyable movie. I liked the pacing, some good action scenes mixed things up for sure. I agree with James about Mila's character not really "fitting" in a post apocolyptic world, her hair, her face...everything about her was noticeably cleaner than anyone else...that bothered me.

Was cool to see Michael Gambon in this movie though!
[Reveal] Spoiler:
"I'll show YOU weapons!"

Not really sure if that counts as a spoiler...

As far as the ending goes:
[Reveal] Spoiler:
The twist was pretty self explanatory I thought when they zoomed in on Eli's eyes it clearly showed his cloudy/blind eyes. Plus that also explains his incredible hearing and smell throughout the movie. Also why he never shot first, he only shot people after he heard where their shot came from...etc etc. They should have ended right when he was reading the bible from his memory though...the whole Mila Kunis gearing up and setting out on the road made me groan.

Gambon is funny in the movie and the ending is a bit too heroic with what you mention during the ending, but it's still a good movie.

After watching The Road last week...and then this this week...two VERY different movies about a world after an apocalypse of some sort lol.

I liked both for different reasons though. Comparing those two movies is like comparing Saving Private Ryan to Stripes. (Not saying that The Book of Eli is a comedy or anything...but hopefully my point makes sense?)

I liked the film... wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it.

I really loved the main 'theme' music. It carried so much emotion and was very powerful.

Even if you're not religious at all, I find the Bible to be a very compelling myth.

I gave it the same weight as if the book he carried was the Illiad or the Odyssey - of course those books don't expect as much from men as the Bible.

Either way, it worked for me.

Just saw this last night, and it was a pretty decent and compelling film, mainly for for the strong acting, espeically from Denzel, evenKunis showed more range then I expected. I'll admit that at first i wasn't too keen on the "washed-out" look of the film, but I got used to it pretty quickly and it added to the film aas well. and as for the twist, well I already knew what it was going into the film and it didn't bother NEARLY as much as it bothered James, so I viewed it differently then most people did, there were planty of hints at the twist and it didn't make me roll my eyes like the twists to Fight Club and High Tension did(I mention those films becuase they're twists were also hinted at throughout the film)though i'll admit the twist wasn't REALLY necessary since
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Eli had memorized the entire bible, it really wouldn't have made a difference whether he was blind or not, he could've very well destroyed the book himself and avoided alot of trouble,
but the film was still compelling enough that I was willing to let that go.

7/10

My New Years Resolution was to not see any movie that James did not rate at least 3 stars. I broke this resolution with Book of Eli...but I really think it should have gotten three stars...

Actually, the twist was necessary for a theme of the movie.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Eli was guided completely by faith, ie..he was guided by God. Being blind was a metaphor for people (who believe in God) not being able to "SEE" God, but still have faith that he exists. Or at least that's the way I interpreted it.

First post here, months after I registered. Gonna post in the introduction thread ASAP...

Even with me being more or less non-religious, I actually liked the move.

The usual remarks about plot and setting aside...does anybody besides me think that the general look and feel were a VERY blatant rip-off of the "Fallout 3" computer RPG? The devastated highways and turnpikes, the wrecked cars, cannibals, even down to the monochromatic, almost colorless look of things? Or, to be more kind, let's say there is an obvious influence...some of the scene settings, especially the one where Eli lets the rape/murder happen seem to have been lifted from the game 1:1...

Post Re: THE BOOK OF ELI
Came to this thread because I was listening to the U2/Johnny Cash collaboration "The Wanderer" and the lyrics ("I went out walking under an atomic sky...I went out walking with a Bible and a gun") reminded me of The Book Of Eli.

I'd give the overall movie *** and that's what I would have given it when I saw it on opening weekend. Considering that it came out in the January/February season of cinematic drear, the movie on the whole was pretty good. The main reason I went to see it in the theater was the Hughes Brothers direction. That and Denzel's performance managed to lift it out of the realm of generic post apocalypse movies.

As for the twist, when it came it worked. Yet the last secene seemed too comic book like in a way.
