 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
People need to lay off Leno. This is not his fault. This is Jeff Zucker's fault. He's the real villain. Not Jay Leno. Leno was screwed over to when they forced him out of the tonight show for Conan.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
I'm no Leno fan, but I like Jimmy Kimmel even less. A couple jabs at Leno would have been fair game, but his jokes were incessant and a little nasty. For me, it actually had the opposite effect. I felt a little sorry for Leno.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
I think everyone is finally seeing Leno as a weasel instead of the everyday man; I once liked him, but now Leno and NBC made me into a CBSer for life.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Leno had Kimmel on his show last night for his 10 at 10 (that's ten questions at ten o'clock....clever). Kimmel refused to back off of Leno. At one point Leno asked Kimmel what the worst practical joke he ever pulled on someone was. Kimmel responded that he promised someone for 5 years that he could have his job and once he gave that person his job, he ripped it back away from him. The video's pretty hilarious and it seems that Leno can at least accept that what's going on with NBC is funny. I've been a Conan supporter for years, even before he was slated to take over the tonight show. There have been very few moments in talk show history funnier than Conan and Jim Carrey's 'In the Year 2000.'

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Agreed. Leno had many, many years to prepare for his grand exit. Zucker, in his attempt to placate everyone (in particular the syndicates), created this entire situation in order to make everyone happy. Leno is no more a jerk than Conan is for expressing outrage over the schedule shuffling.

I don't hate Leno personally, but I do despise his broad and diluted form of comedy.
This whole thing has created some pretty good comedy from the other folks though, that's for sure.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Leno is not funny. Conan is rarely not. Any resolution that ends up with Conan coming out ahead would be fine with me.

Eh, Conan never really did much for me, I wouldn't say he's unfunny, but he just dosen't make me laugh all that often, at least not compared to Leno.

Whether or not Leno is funny remains second to the fact that Leno is mighty profitable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ9m1an-pQ8Chinese TV uses computer animations to explain the story thus far. It's pretty bizarre until around the 55 second mark. At that point Conan morphs into the Hulk and everything starts to make sense.

It doesn't really seem to make sense at any point, but it is funny to watch them all morph then brawl...

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
I started following this saga a bit more. Leno's been telling his side of the story, basically explaining that it wasn't his fault (which IMO it wasn't) but the NBC execs'. Conan and Jay seem to be on the same page, as they've apparently been in contact with each other since this whole thing started. It appears that Conan's decided to take the $45 million buyout from NBC to terminate his contract with the stipulation that he cannot badmouth the network before he's taken off the show. However, Conan then decided to take advantage of a clause in his contract to say "Fuck you." to NBC, as seen in the following clip from Wednesday night's show: Conan's newest Tonight Show characterApparently, this is also a gesture from Conan to Jay since that car is the only one he doesn't have for his collection. Whatever the case is, I loved the cleverness Conan showed in exacting some retribution on the network that screwed him.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Very funny. NBC's (Zucker's) solution to the Jay Leno thing has been absurd. Not only did it make it easy for Conan to leave (probably to FOX) but it's brought on just an incredible amount of ill will toward a network that has been suffering in the ratings. Zucker's firing is now all but guaranteed and they've lost the one writer/performer that really deserved a chance to get comfortable in Carson's seat. Tonight is Conan's last episode and I hope he, with the usual grace, unloads some more bullets into NBC's corpse.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
The whole format of late night chat with endless "guests" there to flog movies, books and music is just so 1980's and tired. the almost bored fake conversations with anything even slightly edgy non existent.
I think that the real issue is not Leno, Conan or even Dave. It's all about the decline of the format and the poor ratings that are being generated.
I just don't get how anyone can sit there at nearly midnight and consume this drivel.
Oof course there are occasionally funny moments. But let's be honest, if you stuck any of us on TV for over 200 hours a year, there'd be some funny moments.
As for Conan spending $6m in 2 days when there are people struggling with the economy.... and yes, i feel really sorry for him. he's just been given almost $30 million severance. So sad, poor thing.

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Look, I'm as liberal as the next guy and the next guy after that. I, too, think the format has played itself out. Talk shows just aren't like Dick Cavett who took 3 hours to interview Ingmar Bergman over the course of several nights. I wish Charlie Rose could find a place on a major network. But, alas, people do seem to care about what Julia Roberts thinks about working with The Rock or how Jessica Alba's vacation in Prague played out. I don't care, you don't care, the average viewer probably couldn't care any less than they do about Clive Owen's take on whatever the hell it is he's talking about. It is drivel, pure drivel. I'm not a watcher of Conan and yet I'm kind of a defender. The nostalgia factor (late nights, while in high school, having it on in the background) is probably the major contributor. I admit it isn't a very good reason for defense. But there was a time, and it wasn't all that long ago, when Conan would take the time to interview Caleb Carr (then the first-time author of The Alienist) and then offer satire on Civil War reenactments. It isn't brilliant humor, and he's probably long since given up promoting authors, but I still like the idea that he tried to offer something up a little different. Presumably; I've never seen Jay Leno and haven't seen an episode of Letterman since 1989. I don't know what's right for late night television. I like Conan. No, I don't watch his show (the last one is on right now, ignored by me as I type out this trifle). But the $6 million in two days thing is clearly a joke. He didn't spend that kind of money... it's a stunt. Is Conan venal? Of course. Is he a corporate shill? Definitely. But he always seemed like a funny, eccentric shill. A kindler, gentler prostitute for NBC's promotion department. Fucking stupid rambling post. Man. I just read over this thing and realize I never got around to making a point. ALRIGHT. PEOPLE: NPR is available 24 hours a day. Fresh Air offers the kind of interviews I like. Her guests are frequently people I have no interest in. That doesn't mean she (the host, Terry Gross) can't find an interesting angle. Charlie Rose is the best interviewer working today. Try and not be engaged by him. Also: I'm drunk right now. Really. No kidding. I haven't had a drink in a few years because alcohol, to me, sucks the great nipple's of Satan's hellbeasts. All of a sudden, who knows why, a few scotches seemed like a good idea and now I'm just waiting for my liver to kick the shit right out of me. But, when I eventually come back to this post, I want to remember just why it is that I mostly abstain from alcohol (I'm very lightweight) and instead get high on raisin bran. And by "raisin bran" I mean sweet mama tap water. Anyhow, Conan is funny. Ha ha. Worst post you'll ever read by me.

It's posts like this that make me love the forum. You're right on so many counts and yes Charlie Rose is the best and yes you may be drunk, but you make more sense than almost anyone So I raise a glass to you - be happy Now let me say this. Hold on, I need a drink.... returns from half empty bottle of wine... Network TV is an embarrassment and the fact that Jay Leno is their late night flag waver.... Conan after Leno had semi sharp teeth, but he was emasculated on the Tonight Show but what the hell, he sold out I sometimes think that network TV is part of the Matrix We're all in those pods but don't know it we sit down and are fed crap that makes us drift off to sleep I know, it's a Conspiracy Theory and i drive a new york cab As for me, I'll stay with Colbert and Jon Stewart Rob

 Re: Everyone vs. Jay Leno
Ironic how no one cared about Conan until he was already going off. Just goes to show how the media can fabricate interest in almost anything.
Personally, I think it's low for Leno to force his way back, if that's what has happened. Could have been NBC's call. But I don't watch late night tv so I could care less. Hard to feel too sorry for a guy walking away with $40,000,000. I'd glady walk away from anything for that kind of cash...including this forum!
But I would appreciate if someone could explain this Coco thing. Was that a nickname Conan had? I never heard about it until the I'm With Coco stuff popped up.
