The Hold Steady are a bunch of hacks. Boring bar rock hyped up as something relevant. It's nothing unique, it has no edge, and the band has a rudimentary understanding of their instruments. I could understand being into it if you've never heard a band trying to hash out covers in a dingy bar or at a shitty wedding.

They may be hacks, I don't know.
But if so, they're energetic and entertaining hacks with well-written lyrics and fantastic live shows.

The Mountain by Heartless Bastards. A good rockin' album with a little Texas twang to it.

'Europe Endless' - Kraftwerk, as song 3 of my 'head-trip' list, which (of course) starts with 'The End'.

Are we talking about the same band? And low blow with the "I could understand being into them..." line. Perhaps you could have said, "They sound like a band trying to hash out covers..." rather than impugning my musical knowledge. I am enjoying this forum so far because of the respect that has been shown to everyone's opinion. Disagree with me by all means, I love a good debate, but I don't particularly want to play on that level with you.

Great to see some Cave fans, Dig Lazarus Dig was probably my favourite album of 08.
Haven't listened to that album yet. I will try to check it out sometime. I have only heard the title song which is incredibly catchy.

I can see what people mean when they criticize Hold Steady for being a shitty bar band, but I've seen them live and you can't deny how much fun they are. As far as Animal Collective, it saddens me that no one ever seems to mention Sung Tongs, still my favorite album of theirs

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Stay Alive
at Pitchfork's recommendation. The album seems pretty good so far.

Opeth-Black Rose Immortal

Quickly becoming the best 20 minutes ever recorded, to my ears.

Semi off topic but cool anyway, in Mike Mendez' film The Killers he uses the portion of The End of "The killer awoke at dawn...he put his boots on.." for the opening sequence of the James brothers killing their family. It fit so well I think he filmed it with the lyrics and cadence in his head.

Been listening to a bunch of Jr. Walker and the All-Stars...

Porcupine Tree are probably the most shamefully overlooked band in existence. It doesn't even seem like they've reached underground cult status like other similar bands (ie. Opeth). Even their blatantly commercial music somehow fails to make a substantial impression on the music community.

So anyway I started listening to Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle last week and it pretty much altered the course of my existence. Well, not really but it's pretty sweet. I should probably get their other albums but I want to get to the bottom of this beast first.
