Night and Fog is a short film. At least get your money's worth with Shoah. :D

I will say this... IMO, BLOOD SIMPLE is the best Coen Brothers movie.

Really?

That's one that I've seen and liked.

I'd put it neck and neck with No Country for Old Men personally. As for something I'd love to see James review, how about the searing documentary Dear Zachary?

Well, whatever your choice is, Private Message me the title and then I'll pass it along to James. I'd rather people not know the film until it's release date has been confirmed. Alos, the suspense would be much more satisfying for me.

In that case ram should just PM James directly. Even more suspense for you. I say cut out the middleman.

I like that Ed. I like that a lot.

Sorry Flow.

Alright...it's done.

I sent Mr. B my choice. It's up to him if he wants to post the title...or keep you all in suspense (Phil).

I had thought of a few like...

The Three Amigos
My Cousin Vinny
Full Metal Jacket
Miller's Crossing
Blood Simple

...among others. Not the greatest of films I just listed, but these we're some selfish picks more than anything else. I went with the title I had in mind all along.

Any guesses?

Okay, I have been given the title and I'll keep it quiet for now. I own a copy of it on DVD, so there's no need for me to procure it either through Netflix or amazon.com.

It's slotted in fourth on my "upcoming reviews" list, after CAVALCADE, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, but before THE GREAT ZIEGFELD. If we assume about a review per week during the slow weeks of late December and January, that would mean it would show up around January 15.

Since the Rules and Guidelines topic is locked, I just want to add that this was a lot of fun. My thanks to James for the "prize" and to Evenflow for all his hard work in running the competition.

I'm feeling good about next year. Mutants and aliens and toads beware...

You know...that was another that I was thinking about, but no.

It is in black and white though.

Salo is worth watching. To some it's a masterpiece. Given what people are used to nowadays it's not all that shocking. Very bizarre. It's also interesting to note that Pasolini was murdered for making this film. Plus it's a Criterion release.

It's not so much shocking as it is downright disturbing and hard to watch. I can sit through Hostel and Wolf Creek/ with a few shudders and maybe a squirm or two (I can think of one for each) but Salo just gets to me.

Are you guys going to be doing this again?

Salo's on my shortlist of the worst movies I've ever seen. A completely inept attempt to marry the Marquis De Sade to Italian Fascism. One of those movies which mixes up provocation with importance. Plus it has a 30 minute sequence about people eating shit. Just 'cause.

It's not SALO.

We will be running the contest again in 2010. Phil (Evenflow) indicated he had some new wrinkles he wanted to implement, so we'll see where things go from here. There will also be a separate "beat Berardinelli" Oscar contest in March that will have actual prizes.

Between those Twitter blurbs, one word reviews and this quote I've realised that James is one hell of a tease. Now I can't wait for March.

Argh, it's a movie James already owns?

Fail, Ram. Total fail. just kidding, dude

In other news, next year is going to be a little bit different than this one. At risk of giving away too many details, you should know that winning is going to be either easier or harder, depending on where you stand. Also, different statistics are going to be considered and factored for the year-long contest, in addition to 'winning' each week.

I'm more than happy to wait myself. It should only be two weeks or so. What I'm saying is, he should share the title privately to his hearts' content, but let's keep it quiet publicly.

So is this competition continuing in 2010? If so, where?

Sorry if these questions are obvious or if I'm a bit slow--I joined the forums in summer but didn't really get involved until November so I'm behind the curve in some regards.
