Film: Slumdog, a close second being Reader
Director: Boyle
Actor: Rourke
Actress: I don't want to decide, can I vote for all three? Hathaway, Winslet, Streep all equal so no vote from me (note I have not seen Frozen River though) All roles were different, all wonderful, all three should get it in my opinion.
S. Actor: Ledger
S. Actress: Tomei

cheers,

Hey all, my votes would be:

Picture: Slumdog Millionaire, but only because Revolutionary Road wasn't nominated.
Director: Danny Boyle
Actor: Frank Langella - I can't think of many actors who not only wouldn't make Nixon into a laughable caricature, but keep him somewhat sympathetic and intimidating at the same time. Rourke was amazing, but I think a lot of that had to do with how his part was written.
Actress: Kate Winslet, for two great performances this year
Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger - if it were any other year for Michael Shannon...
Supporting Actress: Viola Davis

Best Picture:
As much as I loved Slumdog Millionaire, and I know everyone's voting for it, it's really a close call between that movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk. Ultimately I would vote for Milk

Best Director: The best director of the year is Christopher Nolan, but he isn't here. I would vote for David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. What he created her is simply a great epic tale.

Best Actor: Mickey Rourke is great, really great, and my vote would go to him.

Best Actress: Kate Winslet, hands down.

Best Supporting Actor: No one else deserves it as much as Heath Ledger.

Best Supporting Actress: This is hard. I think Viola Davis, Penelope Cruz and Marisa Tomei all deserve it. Personally, I vote for Marisa Tomei.

I would vote for:

Picture - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Director - Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Actor - Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Actress - Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married (with a slight nudge for Winslet because her work in Revolutionary Road was my favorite all year)
Supporting Actor - Heath Leger, The Dark Knight
Supporting Actress - Viola Davis, Doubt

Best Picture: Milk
Best Actor: Sean Penn
Best Actress: Only seen Streep, so I don't feel right voting here.
Best Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams
Best Director: Gus Van Sant

Milk doesn't even make my top five of the year, but in this weak year for nominees, it's my favourite to win in the major categories. Best Supporting Actor is extremely close, though, as Brolin, Ledger and Downey all gave terrific performances.

Thanks for the kind words Etifupleez.

However, I humbly bow to our true and glorious leader JB and rejoice in my service as a lowly Mod.

This is a very cool forum. The web has been in need of a quality hangout for people who love movies.

If I was a voter...

Best Picture: Milk
I'm surprised so many of you loved Slumdog over say, Milk or Frost/Nixon. I liked SM but thought it functioned mostly as Oscar bait (you could make that argument for F/N but I feel every element of that film functioned perfectly.)

Best Director: Danny Boyle
That being said, the direction and cinematography were by far the best points in the film, the acting or screenplay aren't on that level.

Best Actor: Sean Penn
I liked Rouke, and being from Jersey I felt a special poignancy in the film, but I really think Sean Penn gave the best performance of his career.

Best Actress: Anne Hathaway
I'm happy Winslet was nominated for The Reader and not for that god-awful Revolutionary Road, and Maryl Streep gave the best performance in the actor-driven Doubt... but I have to give my vote to Anne Hathaway in RGM. The scene where she makes a toast was cringe inducing (in a great way), the most I felt emotionally in a film all year (aside from the last act of Elegy).

Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr.
It's a nice shock to the system if a comic book character could win a best actor award, but I feel comedy is always ignored by the academy, and really, the funniest performance of the year deserves an award.

Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz

<3 Woody

I love how only one of my picks are winning the popular vote. Shows how much a renegade, rambling boy of pleasure I am. 8-)

P.S.: I hate to be a pest and maybe turn this whole thread upside-down, but if The Berardinellis are strictly our votes, doesn’t that mean we could vote for things that weren’t nominated by the Oscars and they would still count?

Post Re: The Berardinellis
Ok... here's my humble opinion:

Movie: Slumdog should win it, but if I was a member of the academy I would vote for "The urious Case Of Benjamin Button"... I thought it was really amazing (yes, a little bit depressing, but amazing nontheless)

Actor: I would really love Mickey Rourke to win, and my feeling is that he will

Actress: The toughest one to predict of the night... I would love to see Ann Hathaway win it. Just saw "Rachel Got Married" and though sometimes you feel you're watching wedding day home movie, the truth is Ann gave a eye opening puch in the stomach kind of perfomance. But my feeling is that Kate Winslet is going to win

Director: Boyle... (read my best picture line... same opinion about fincher... amazing but Boyle will win)

Supporting actor: Does anybody think Heath Ledger is NOT going to win?

Supporting actress: Viola Davis or Amy Adams for Doubt...

What a great forum, so glad I found it. I've admired JB's reviews for some time now.

Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (although, were they nominated, I'd have to consider both Gran Torino and Doubt)

Actor: For now, Sean Penn...but don't count it; I have not seen The Wrestler, and I suspect Mickey's performance might take it.

Actress: Gotta go with Meryl (but don't tell Kate)

Director: Danny Boyle

Supporting Actor: Going against the obvious, but I have to choose Hoffman

Supporting Actress: Viola Davis (though I've only seen two of the films in this category)
