Wild Thing, I Love You

Tuesday, October 13: NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU
Wednesday, October 14: LAW ABIDING CITIZEN
Friday, October 16: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

After a weakly Week 32 (which actually hasn't been totally resolved), we have a more substantial week 33, a week just epic enough to satisfy the appetites of the starving masses. This week we have a collection of stories about life and love in the city, named "New York, I Love You", the Gerard Butler popcorn muncher "Law Abiding Citizen", which promises to be as ultra-serious and macho as his last few action forays, and Spike Jonze's trespass into the world of Maurice Sendak, namely her children's story (and one of my personal favorite childhood reads) "Where The Wild Things Are". There are no bonus questions this week, but be primed and set for more challenges of various sorts over the next few weeks as the year winds down.

New York, I Love You: 3 stars
Law Abiding Citizen: 2 stars
Where the Wild Things Are: 3.5 stars.

(Although the rapturous praise the movie received from A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips on At the Movies makes me almost tempted to go out on a limb with a prediction of four stars. But I'll resist.)

I'm tempted to go out on a limb and predict that Wild Things will get 4 stars. But I'm gonna play it safe.

I've read the script for Law Abiding Citizen and although it was an early draft, it looks like from the clips and trailers that most of the changes to the script are pretty minor. So in other words, the movie will be absolutely gripping and intense for the first two thirds but then completely fall a part in the lame and ridiculous third act.

New York: 3 stars

Law Abiding Citizen: 2.5 stars

I'm taking that risk. This week will be a good week.

There will be some date changes for reviews. New dates will be finalized late tonight, but here's how things look.

NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU will still go up Tuesday.

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN will now go up Friday. (The screening is tonight. Unfortunately, due to the "snow out" in Colorado on Saturday, there's also a baseball game at the same time on what was originally supposed to be an off night. Movie screenings trump normal baseball games. Playoff games trump movie screenings.)

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE will either go up Wednesday or Saturday. (If there's a Game 5, it will be Saturday. If there's no Game 5, it will be Wednesday, because I'll be able to see the screening Tuesday night.)

New York (**1/2) Since this is an anthology, some will likely hit big while others will miss by a wide margin.

Law Abiding Citizen (**) Looks like a fairly generic thriller that will be partiallly salvaged by the appeal of its two leads.

Wild Things (***1/2) Looks like Terabithia-lite with Spike Jonze's typically offbeat sensibilities as director to sweeten things up a bit.

Boy, if James could do some of those special one-word reviews that he's done in the past, that would be awesome!
