Post CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC

(Probably the most outright vicious review I have written in some time.)

SPOILERS must be tagged with the "SPOILER" tag!

Ouch...but when I saw the promos I thought of one thing? It's a Jerry Bruckheimer production, where are the explosions?

This rivals the 'Freddy Got Fingered' and 'A Hole In My Heart' reviews for pure vitriol.

I bet you wish that those fire alarms were more faulty at times like this, eh?

Ow! I can see the bruises on the celluloid. The trailer looked like a standard rom-com, who knew it could be this bad? Especially when it was based on a series of bestselling books?

Huh. This might be another misstep in Isla Fisher attempting to have a career.

I said to someone today,
In this economy, Confessions of a Shopaholic is the real horror movie.
Sounds like maybe I was right.

This was not a good week to spend time in theaters...

At least you can look forward to The Class next week. I'm seeing it tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it. As far as Confessions of a Shopaholic goes... well, Berard's rating speaks for itself. I saw it coming. I just didn't think it would be that bad.

James

... so you liked it :-)

I admire you for hating a movie this much and still managing to write such an interesting review. Maybe the best and worst films are the easiest to write about and it's the boringly average that is hardest of all.

What to say - Roger Ebert gave it 2.5 stars? I love Ebert, but he does tend to throw those stars about these days, since his recent health issues.

RT top critics has it at 10%!!

The saddest news of all?
The film will take in excess of $15m at the box office tis weekend and recoup it's production costs within 10 days. The studio will think, ah hah, America loves these movies, let's make more.

Is that for sure yet though?

My prediction is that He's Just Not That Into You would do surprisingly well this weekend compared to Shopaholic and make the studio rethink their strategy. This has been a very strong box office year so far, which makes me think that standards are being raised ever so slightly.

Trevor,

Predictions as follows:
Box Office Mojo Forum weighted average $19.6m
Box office Guru $17m
Lee's Movie Info $15.2m
Box Office Prophets $23.9m

We'll have early Friday receipts in minutes

Rob

The sequel just hit Pre Pro :-(

Hmm, yeah that's pretty good.
It is Valentine's Day weekend though - that inflates chick flick numbers, right?
I guess I can try to explain it away all I want, but your original point about studios thinking they did something right still stands.

Oh, just looked at the numbers and I was right about one thing - He's Just Not That Into You beat out Shopaholic.
And it's another huge weekend over all.

So Shopaholic made $19 mil opening day or is that the prediction for the weekend and is this counting President's day as well?

Well... not really. I have already seen it. I originally had intended to post the review this past week, then I realized I'd have almost nothing to post next week, so I moved things around. In fact, the only reason I'm seeing Fired Up next week is because I'm desperately in need of reviews of new films, and almost nothing is coming out next weekend or the weekend after (although I expect to have reviews of both Echelon Conspiracy and Crossing Over on or before 2/27).

I always enjoy your most vicious reviews James.
But it seems to me that you have gone soft over the years. :)

I still remember back when I read for the first time your reviews about ''Adrenalin'' or ''Knock Off'', I was litteraly crying from laughter.

JB's little title was hilarious. "Great date movie if you want your partner to suffer." That should be in the Shopaholic commercial!

Same here. I enjoyed the Eragon review.

My wife suckered me into seeing License To Wed last year against my better judgment. I won't make the same mistake with this one ... if she wants to see it she'll have to take ye olde mother-in-law, while I go see Push or something else of interest ;)
