I see all of this Crispin Glover build-up as a tip-off to a review of 'River's Edge'. Or that could just be me wishing out loud with no provocation. No way to be sure.

I noticed that James hasn't reviewed any foreign films as part of this series. I would've loved to read his take on the Argentinian film The Official History which came out in 1985. It's about this well-to-do couple who adopt this girl that, as it turns out, might have been the daughter of a woman who disappeared during a military coup in the country in 1983. It was the Best Foreign Film Oscar Winner that year (1985 that is); I remember watching it during a Spanish class way back in high school but I can't recall much about the film other than the fact that my morally-undernourished classmates at the time thought it was funny when the main character's husband beat her rather viciously during a scene that happens late in the film. They'd also laugh every single time some said a cuss word as though it were the biggest deal ever. I need to track this one down and re-watch it but it would've been kinda interesting to hear James' thoughts on it. Oh well...

The problem with reviewing foreign films and/or art films as part of the '80s series is that readership will be close to nil. When I write a review, I like to think that at least 1000 people will read it (which is about par for the course for older reviews, excepting the "big" ones). Experience has told me that if I review something no one has heard of, no one is going to read it. So I'm trying to stick to reasonably well-known titles. The most obscure I'm likely to get is KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN.

I'm also curious - did you see many foreign movies in the 80s? One of the things I like most about the 80s series is your personal cinema-going recollections, which (and of course I'm guessing here) might be relatively less in number when it comes to foreign cinema.

No, I didn't. Mainstream stuff only. I didn't start seeing foreign films until I began reviewing (1991-ish).

It would be awesome if you could do like a foreign film review series similar to what you're doing here with the 80's series. I'd bet that most of the people on this forum at least would be interested.

Two films which I reckon have stood the test of time from 1985.

One great film - Woody Allen's "The Purple Rose of Cairo"

A good one - Scorsese's slightly strange "After Hours"

James your ReelThoughts have been excellence. From your time capsules to your thoughts on current movie topics.

I didn't see many foreign movies either until my college days. Although I do remember seeing classics like The Bicycle Thief and the Red Balloon in high school and before.
