I'm really sad as this film looks very interesting and it's on at a nearby (15 miles) theater in digital and 3D. My kids prefer to see Pink Panther!

eeek, tasteless little maggots!

Kids have no taste Rob. It's a scientific fact. Why do you think bands like Limp Bizkit was able to exist and thrive?

I'm going to see it tonight. Don't know if the theater I'm going to has it in 3-D or not, but James's review said that it's good no matter what, so I'm not too concerned.

This is getting fantastic reviews.
I'm going to try to see it tomorrow. Either this or Fanboys.

Just got back from watching the 2-D version of Coraline. I was very impressed. The animation is top-notch, as is the story. Definitely recommended. I look forward to others seeing it so we can get a good discussion going.

Hard question,

Ebert paints a very scary picture of this movie for kids

I'm really keen to get my 12 & 9 year old sons to see it

If you have seen it - what do you think?

Thanks
Rob

I haven't seen it so pardon me while I speak out of my ass, but I imagine your kids wold be able to handle it. It's not like they're trying to market Pan's Labyrinth to your kids; I'm sure it's not much scarier than The Nightmare Before Christmas. Have you kids seen that?

I tried again with them. Showed them the trailer on the Apple site in 1080p HD and still zero interest
3D held no sway either.
The good news was that by getting them playing tennis, bike riding, etc they conveniently forgot about Pink Panther 2 so I was spared that fate :-)

It's creepy, but not that scary. There was a little girl sitting close to us who must have been about 2, and she seemed to enjoy it. So I would think your kids would be just fine.

the movie's getting released in 3D this Thursday here in Peru (we have like five 3D theatres only in the whole country...) so I guess I'll watch it with my girlfriend this weekend. the creepier the better for me, although it shouldn't be too scary.

I liked the book, and I might be seeing the movie in a couple days with a friend. I can't wait, it looks awesome.

This was a fantastic film and the frontrunner for next year's Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Its visual creativity rivals that of Pixar, while its storytelling rivals Miyazaki.
I was expecting another Corpse Bride, but this is miles ahead of that film.

You know, I was fully willing to give this film up to the Hot Topic crowd who has Jack Skellington plastered all over their bedroom walls... but it's irresistible. The cast of characters is lovely - I especially loved the man with his circus of mice!

I'd say that parents should hesitate before taking the really young ones to see this. I saw a few parents and children walk out during my screening, and at times it is legitimately creepy even for an older audience. I'll never get over an absurdly happy mother telling her daughter to sew buttons in her eyes, or a surgically sewn smile on a boy. It's very intense, especially for the crowd who is more used to seeing animated films like Kung Fu Panda and Bee Movie!

Just got back from watching this in 3-D and I didn't like it. The stop motion animation was awesome, but I didn't like the story at all. I was bored and looking at the time every few minutes. I know I'm in the minority here, but I think this is highly overrated.

I saw it yesterday with my wife. Definitely creepy, with a Tim Burton quality and influence to its appearance. I found it reasonably intelligent, though some of the resolutions felt simplistic and contrived.

Really want to see this, especially after the really positive reviews. I'm especially keen due to many reviewers noting its scary nature. Well, I say "good for Henry Selick." Animation is not a children's medium and I like that filmmakers like Selick and Andrew Stanton (of Wall-E) are fighting to take away that annoying stereotype.

Begs the question of who's influencing whom.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
Just wondering, but did anybody else lose interest in this film once she was given her 'quest.' While the animation was still interesting to see, it felt like a completely separate movie. It instantly became a standard children's film, rather than the more thoughtful one that it had been.

Yeah, Coraline was really unusual and had a completely different vibe going for it. I didn't like it as much as The Nightmare Before Christmas, but this felt much more hallucinatory and Lewis Carroll-ish than Tim Burton influenced to me. All fans of animation should see this, but I don't think it's really appropriate for kids under 10 or so.

I agree with the previous poster about the last 20 minutes or so of the movie.
