I'm completely alone in this house right now, and I'm taking the liberty to play my guitar at 6am. Being an adult means that nobody gets to tell you no.

So I'm listening to David Gilmour's guitar solo from "Time", after a fashion.

What do you think of Gilmour's contribution to this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl9OKddQBRg

A fantastic version of a great record.

I love me some Stones. I saw them maybe 12 years ago and they were pretty good, still the world's greatest rock n' roll band. Yes, their post-1981 work is a little hit or miss, but I still feel comfortable saying that those who don't like the Stones really can't appreciate rock music at its true essence. They're that good.

Been alternating in my disc changer between:

Wu-Tang Clan-Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Massive Attack-Blue Lines
White Stripes-White Blood Cells

Classic. I love the Stones myself, even if they haven't made a truly great album since 1981.

The Stones are an amazing band. I used to think of them as being kind of one-dimensional for some reason, but then I started to get into songs like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYTLJ8YHi4

Not exactly the most PC number, considering the discussion on feminism on the other thread, but a great tune.

Not terribly familiar with it, though he's as tasteful here as ever.

Man, those Steinberger guitars are weird, though. Unusual to see David without a Strat.

I’ve been trying to kick winter in the ass and blast spring in a way I’ve never done before. Hitting the spin bike at high intensity requires high intensity tunes and as a child of the 80’s, that’s where I get my drive -with a limited amount of non-80’s thrown in. Did a workout yesterday and had a tough time using the stairs to get out of the building. A good portion of my playlist is here:

Van Halen Jump, Panama
Rammstein, Du Hast
ACDC, Chase the Ace, Money Talks, Thunderstruck
Rob Zombie, Never Gonna Stop, Dragula
Sammy Hagar, Can’t Drive 55, Humans Being
Motley Crue, Kickstart My Heart
Dio, Rainbow in the Dark
Judas Priest, Turbo
Kiss, Lick it Up
David Lee Roth, Just Like Paradise
Warrant, Cherry Pie
Bon Jovi, It’s My Life
Joan Jett, I love Rock and Roll
Twisted Sister, Cum on Feel the Noize
Metallica, Enter Sandman
Europe, The Final Countdown
Joe Satriani, Ice Nine, Ride
Green Day, Basket Case
ZZ Top, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man
VNV Nation, (Album) Judgement
Movie music from “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (album)

For cool downs I listen to Jimmy Buffet or classical, Vivaldi, Ludwig Von, Mozart (Marriage of Figaro or the Magic Flute) Mendelsohn, Shubert, with a movie score thrown in: Master and Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean, Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves or a few others.

There are a couple more that I can’t think of right now as I don’t have my player.

Given the above list, does anyone have any suggestions that I may have overlooked?

Despite my legendary music snobbery, a lot of those groups fall within my personal Venn diagram. I shall endeavor to help you out with some other picks from the same groups, plus a few others along the same lines.

Van Halen - "I'm The One", "She's The Woman", "On Fire", "Light Up The Sky"
Extreme (great if you dig Van Halen) - "Play With Me" (it's in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure!), "Decadence Dance", "Pornografitti"
AC/DC - "Gone Shootin'", "Livewire", "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be"
Dio - "Stand Up And Shout", "We Rock"
Black Sabbath (with Dio) - "Neon Knights"
Judas Priest - "Painkiller", "The Hellion/Electric Eye"
Iron Maiden - "Number of the Beast", "Sea of Madness", "Aces High", "Two Minutes To Midnight"
David Lee Roth - "Shyboy", "Ladies' Night In Buffalo?", "Big Trouble", "Elephant Gun"
Metallica - "Hit The Lights", "The Four Horsemen", "Creeping Death", "Call of Ktulu"
Megadeth (great if you dig Metallica) - "Devil's Island", "My Last Words", "Tornado of Souls", "Skin of My Teeth"
Joe Satriani - "Crushing Day", "Satch Boogie", "Mind Storm", ""Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing"
Ozzy Osbourne - "I Don't Know", "S.A.T.O", "Bark At The Moon", "Miracle Man"
Mr. Big - "Addicted To That Rush", "Take a Walk", "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy"
Racer X - "Superheroes", "Godzilla", "Street Lethal"
Steve Vai - "The Reaper", "The Reaper Rap" (both from Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey), "Juice", "The Audience is Listening"

It's funny that you use film scores to cool down, since those tend to be what I work out to. I write to them as well. I think they work well for those two purposes because they provide emotional content, but they're not too technically complex. I usually go for John Williams' action/adventure stuff, plus assorted others.

Also, great Mozart picks. I've seen both of those operas performed live, though Don Giovanni continues to elude me.

(Also, as a point of correction, "Humans Being" is a Van Halen song, not a Sammy Hagar song. In fact, Sam's resistance to putting any work into this song was one of the things that sundered his relationship with the band. I'm not a big fan of "Humans Being" myself, but I will admit that the moment in Twister when the symphony orchestra introduces the guitar riff was a highlight of the movie for me.

And "Cum On Feel The Noize" is by Quiet Riot, though it was originally written and performed by a lesser-known group called Slade. The very good movie Cemetery Junction features a young Slade fan singing this song. If you dig this one, also check out Quiet Riot's "Slick Black Cadillac", which they wrote with their former guitarist Randy Rhoads--the same Randy Rhoads who left the group to play on Ozzy Osbourne's first two solo albums.)

Some great titles there Ken. I like your Venn.

Most of those I have lost in the cassette to CD shift that gobbled up the music of my teens. Until recently, I had a way to play those cassettes. Except for Mr. Big. Mr. Big died an untimely death when his case was fractured and his innards sent streaming into the river far below following a breakup with a GF. (Hey... "streaming music". I guess I can do streaming!) Steve Vai was eaten by an off brand ghetto blaster in the early 90's. I'd forgotten about him and feel like a heel. I'll continue to check out and rip albums* from the library and your list of add-ons will go with me. Thank you!

Film scores for cool down need to be mellow, non-actiony pieces. But I agree, some are great for main workout times. I've done a lot of copy/paste into different segments of scores. Ex. Raider's tracks "Desert Chase" and "Airplane Fight" coupled with "Canoes Massacre" from Mohicans makes for a great high intensity intervals workout. If the wheel on the the spin bike is too hot to touch it's been a good music day.
The last three weeks have had good music days.
This summer is getting kicked hard. No more wheelsucking. I'm going to take my pulls with the fast kids.

Humans being -my foul. No excuse.*2

"Cum on Feel the Noize" I prefer the QR version over the Slade. I'm qwerky that way. Kind of like prefering the Talk Talk version of "It's my Life".

*Is this bad of me? I don't feel bad. I mean, I bought and paid for them once already and they made my playing platform obsolete. Dicks.

*2 Interesting tidbit: Sammy Hagar song "20th Century Man" lyrics contain the lines:

"And by the time I'm 35, I'll be a fat slob
I don't care about 1985
'Cause if I ain't dead, you know I'll be half alive
I don't care about 1985"

:o
You know the rest.

We're both quirky then. Honestly though I don't know why one wouldn't prefer Talk Talk's original, and not just because it's the original. No Doubt did a by-the-numbers cover, so there's no new twist, and Stefani is an inferior singer. Great covers that meet or exceed the original feature, pretty much as a rule, a different take, great performance(s), or both.

A "lesser known group"? I mean, it was before my time and all, but Slade were huge in the early 70ies. And everybody knows this lame Christmas song of theirs, which must be among the ten most overplayed Christmas songs of all time.

I know Slade were huge in their time, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a classic rock radio station with Slade in regular rotation. Quiet Riot, on the other hand, usually has at least a couple songs. By no means am I commenting on which band is better, but I think it's clear which one has clung to the public consciousness with more tenacity.

As for which Christmas song is most overplayed, there is only one answer: ALL OF THEM.

In fact, the only Christmas music I can think of off the top of my head that I don't hate is Vince Guaraldi's music for the Charlie Brown Christmas special. It's brilliant music, and it's all the better when you consider how much Charles Shulz hated jazz.

Kevin DuBrow absolutely HATED "Cum On Feel The Noize" he tried to deliberately sing it as badly as possible, but unfortunately for him people really loved it.

I don't think QR hated the song, per se, they just hated doing a cover period. Too bad Frankie Banalli had to play that awesome drum beat or they would've had succeeded in playing the song badly enough to forget the cover.

That must be a cultural difference. I don't think 'Quiet Riot' made it big in Germany. It's not my kind of music, but I was exposed to a lot of 80ies hard rock/ metal at school and would probably remember any hit songs. And I don't know any (although I've heard the name).

The band has gone on the record as saying they hated the song, and deliberately recorded it as if they didn't give two shits just so they could get it out of the way. Unfortunately for them, the best rock and roll usually sounds like the band didn't give two shits about what others thought, and thus it became a hit.
