I find that an odd thing to say, since they're basically the same band.

No they're not at all, they sound completely different from one another.

They really don't. It's all plodding butt rock.

I think you mixed it up, Sexy Cocoa, it's actually that all Nickelback songs sound the same.

There's no good option, but I'd rather listen to lyrics that sound like a 14-year-old trying to be spiritually serious than lyrics that sound like a pervy 13-year-old trying to sound badass. Chad Kroeger is a misogynistic pig. Neither band is the worst in the world or anything close to that, although they're quite terrible. The guitarist for Creed has shown talent, but we haven't seen any signs of talent from any other member of either band. Nickelback and their ugly and offensive lyrics bother me. Creed is just silly. Neither are good, so I just don't listen to them to every degree that is possible.

I really don't see how he's a "misogynistic pig" at all(I think that's a bit of a loaded and unnecessary statement) and I really don't see how their lyrics are "ugly" and "offensive" either :? "Lullaby" has hands down some of the best lyrics i've ever heard, I DARE you not to get choked up listening to it.

Both bands do sound very different, guess I have a better ear for this type of music then you guys do. ;)

Never heard that song before, and it did make me cry, but I don't think for the reasons you were hoping.

I stand by that as much as any statement I could make. But I'll admit I didn't make a case. He's a pig because of how he views women. You're a fan... tell me how the lyrics to "Figured You Out" or "Something in Your Mouth" are not offensive, insulting, and sexist. "S.E.X." and "Midnight Queen" endorse making sexual advances on women regardless of permission or their desires. You and I have many disagreements, Vex, but in general I agree with your stances on how people shouldn't be treated poorly, so I'm a bit surprised your a fan. I just don't see how any of these lyrics are at all defensible.

You say that as if Nickelback is the only band in the world who has songs with those kinds of lyrics, roughly 90% of AC/DC's catalog has songs with similarly themed lyrics, does that make them and all other bands with similar lyrics "sexist" and are they any more "defensible"? You tell me.

I just think you're way overanalying things, I can understand some people being offended by the lyrics, but it's not like these kinds of lyrics are anything new, bands like Motley Crue sing about the same damn thing, and I rarely ever hear anyone give them and other bands shit for it, so to me it dosen't make sense to pick on Nickelback for something that's not all solely unique to them.

The lyrics just don't bother me, and there's no rule or law that says I HAVE to be offended by stuff like this. I can't force myself to be offended by something someone else is bothered by. If you can't accept that, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm surprised you would overreact this much to lyrics, honestly you're starting to sound an awful lot like the PMRC.

Not really, no. I didn't say anything about any other band at all. We were talking about Nickelback and Creed so that's who I talked about.

Yes they are sexist and no it's not defensible. I absolutely do not care if 1% or 100% of other bands do it, it's degrading and stupid and childish regardless. Incidentally, AC/DC is a terrible band, but that's not the discussion.

Vexer wrote:

You're going to need to explain this or I'm going to have to assume you don't know what that O word means. I said I was offended by specific Nickelback songs that contain such thoughtful lyrics as:

(to a woman): "I love your lack of self-respect"..."You're so much cooler when you never pull it out"..."I was lying when I told her that I'm only gonna lick her tonight!"...""No" is a dirty word...Sex is always the answer"

Now, if I said that those lyrics were a metaphor for fracking or oil spills or Peruvian dictators, then you could say I'm overanalyzing. When I say that those lyrics offend me because they degrade women, seems like a simple conclusion. You don't have to agree, but the criticism of my conclusions is kinda absurd, no?

Ahem: we were talking about Nickelback. That's why I, you know, talked about Nickelback. I'm well aware they're far from the first or the only -- I assure you, I have a problem with anyone doing it.

I'm not aware of their stance on Nickelback lyrics, but if they align with mine then I'm happy to stand by them.

If someone went up to a woman you care about and said "you know, you'd look a lot hotter with my cock in your mouth," would you tell her to chill out if she was offended? I just don't buy the argument that there's a difference. You're welcome to disagree.

I think there is a HUGE difference between saying something like that straight to someone's face and putting it in a song, no one takes every song by every band at face value, and I just simply don't take these types of lyrics nearly as seriously as you do, i'm sure the band members don't actually hold those stances in real life, I think like a lot of rock bands they're just exaggerating for entertainment in those particular songs, and you either like it or you don't. You have a right to be personally offended by them and I have a right not to be offended by them.

BTW, did you check out the link I posted, I think the fact that that particular song has saved people from committing suicide(no joke, almost every video of that song on Youtube at least had a few comments like that) more then makes up for some potentially offensive lyrics in their other songs.

I've never made a big deal over the sexism in Nickelback's songs. My issue is that they all sound the same...plodding butt rock. There aren't many bands who can make every album and song sound the same and get away with it. I can think of two or three, but that's about it.

You can say pretty much the same thing about bands like Motorhead and AC/DC though, I personally don't mind the songs sounding similar as long as their catchy. However, Nickelback's earlier material before actually sounds very different from their more commercial stuff, compare this song to "How You Remind Me" and there's a considerable difference:

Actually, Motorhead and AC/DC were two bands I had in mind when I wrote the above post. AC/DC has made the same album 15 times, Motorhead has made the same album 21 times. But they are all great rock and roll.

Yes, and I like them for what they are.

The guy was 84 years old. I don't think "Karma" had much to do with it. Maybe being a Democrat gave him a pass from a "Karmic" perspective all these years.

Have you not heard? 84 is the new 48. 'Twas dadburn karma that killed the brute. Don't hornswaggle the facts, Larue.

I missed Talk Like a Prospector day back in January and feel like I should play some catch up.

So is Fred Phelps or Nickelback worse?

I vote Nickelback because there are people out there that either take them seriously, or don't even realize just how terrible they are. Everyone who pays attention (or paid, I guess) to Phelps knew he was an asshat.

Hard to say who's the most harmful as Fred Phelps abused the rights of the first amendment in order to thrust his hideous message into the faces of mourners. Nickleback, on the other hand, write songs like "Rockstar" which is, in its substance, condensable to "God hates fags".

While I do dislike Nickelback and find their career to be the epitome of success through calculated mediocrity, I will stick up for them on the basis of Patton Oswalt's argument.

Really? You can't see the connection at all?

NICKLEBACK "ROCKSTAR"
I'm through with standing in line
To clubs we'll never get in
It's like the bottom of the ninth
And I'm never gonna win
This life hasn't turned out
Quite the way I want it to be

TRANSLATION:
I'll put a boot in your ass
Should you fuck with my flag
I wanna kiss and hold ya
Though God hates him some fag
I'll soap you up
And rub you down
Protestin' a funeral
What we do in this town

Still not convinced?

NICKLEBACK'S "ROCKSTAR"
I want a brand new house
On an episode of Cribs
And a bathroom I can play baseball in
And a king size tub big enough
For ten plus me

TRANSLATION:
Have sex with one dude
And all the sudden I'm gay?
That's what we called a party
Way back in my day
So what I've been with fellers
Don't be such a drag
God may hate the queers
But he never met this fag

Hmm. It sounds like that guy from Nickleback is kind of at war with himself. On the one hand, he's a line dancin' redneck and on the other he's having guilty sex with men. Not even guilty, really, if you consider the lyrics.

I retract my former statement, upon further consideration. Nickleback's lyrics aren't really "God hates fags" like Fred Phelps would have liked. Nickleback's lyrics are more like "The Nickle's here, the Nickle's queer get used to it."

I sort of admire Nickleback now that I realize their songs are just dressed up gay anthems.

Well, time to submit another post that I'll briefly regret before it gets deleted. Bottom's up!

HEY! That's what Nickleback fans chant at their concerts!

It's the circle of life.

Yeah, Nickleback, the answer to a pub-quiz question. I remember their 2002 "you remind me" song that was never off the radio for months. Then they disappeared over here only for their plain dreadful "I wanna be a rockstar" song to appear in a sofa specialists commercial.
