I've only seen 25 films from 2011, but here's a rough ranking.

1. Source Code
2. The King's Speech
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
4. Melancholia
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
6. Hugo
7. Another Earth
8. Super 8
9. The Artist
10. Take Shelter

You get brownie points for having Source Code and Another Earth on your top 10. Especially Another Earth since it sometimes seems like I'm alone in loving that movie. It is very underrated.

Resurrection Time, baby!

My Top 10 of 2011 have changed a bit since mid-2012, when I posted it first. Originally, it looked like this:

Unke wrote:
1. The Skin I live in
2. We need to talk about Kevin
3. Melancholia
4. The Artist
5. A Separation
6. Contagion
7. Margin Call
8. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
9. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
10. X-Men: First Class

Now it looks like this:

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene
2. The Skin I live in
3. We need to talk about Kevin
4. Melancholia
5. The Artist
6. A Separation
7. Shame
8. Contagion
9. Margin Call
10. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

My re-done list of a VERY weak year.

1: Drive
2: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
3: Margin Call
4: Shame
5: Hugo
6: The Descendants
7: Super 8
8: The Ides Of March
9: The Lincoln Lawyer
10: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

The top 4 are the only ones I'm really enthusiastic about. In most years, the last 2 would've been honorable mentions.

Yay, more love for Another Earth! :D

But you loose me with having God Bless America in your honorable mentions list. Sorry, but I HATED that movie with a passion. It's not the worst movie of the year from an acting/technical stand point, but it's one of the most unpleasant movies I ever had to sit through. It's so full of itself, so sanctimonious and so completely unfunny.

I revisited Source Code about a week or two ago, and it was as good as I remember it, if not better. Another Earth was the kind of film that kinda sunk in AFTER the actual viewing. Pretty good film. Actually, the same happened with Brit Marling's other film, Sound of My Voice, which is also a 2011 release.

I hated God Bless America for the same reasons as you, as satire it failed miserably for me and I didn't find it funny, clever or subversrive at all.

I found the scenes where Frank and Roxy shoot people for almost no reason besides not liking them(sweet 16 girl, a theater patrons answering their cellphones, and tons of people at the American Idol-esque show) disgusting, offensive and extremely repellant. Did Goldwaithe seriously expect people to root for assholes like that? The whole film feels like a shallow 90 minute rant from Goldwaithe bitching and whining about how much this generation sucks without actually offering any real solutions and ignoring that past generations had their own problems as well. Honestly I don't think Goldwaithe is much better then the right-wing extremists he claims to hate so much, I personally liked him better as an actor then as a director.

Post Re: Your 2011 Top 10 List (No hurry)
Wow. I realized upon reading the resurrection of this thread that I have not seen many 2011 films at all, and I'm not really sure why. I would call it a weak year, but really in fairness only in the sense of I guess there wasn't much I really wanted to see. That Transformers 3 could actually be in my top 15 (but I'm not about to find out) tells me something, because that movie was terrible. But then this could give me the proverbial kick in the pants I guess I need to watch some of the holes in my 2011 viewing that I can stream on Netflix. Anyway, FWIW this is my top 10:

1. The Descendants - by a mile, too
2. A Separation - also well ahead of everything below it
3. Source Code - I just love sci-fi metaphysical philosophical stories
4. Super 8
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
6. Crazy, Stupid, Love. - not the deepest comedy by any means, but funny, and great acting from a great cast
7. Thor - largely thanks to Branagh
8. The Muppets - funniest scene of 2011 easily is the chickens' cover of "Fuck You,"
9. The Lincoln Lawyer
10. Coriolanus - another acting treat
