Post And the nominations are...
Opening a thread to discuss the Oscar nominations, which are due to be announced Thursday, January 16, 2014 @ 8:30 am EST. I rarely have enough to say about the actual nominations to warrant a full column. This year, I'll use Twitter to post a few random reactions and I have already written a preemptive ReelThoughts about snubs and omissions. Nevertheless, the nominations are a big enough event to warrant a place for discussion.

Gravity- Best Picture,Best Director and Best Actress. Not bad for a movie with no story. Called it.

Best surprises-Barkhad Abdi and June Squibb

Worst suprises- nothing for Inside Llywen Davis and Blue is the Warmest Color(maybe next year) and Robert Redford or All is Lost.

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR was eligible for all the main awards this year, having opened on U.S. screens before December 31. It just didn't earn any nominations because (1) it's rated NC-17 and (2) it's in French. Kiss of death x 2 as far as AMPAS is concerned.

Curiously, it could be eligible for Foreign Language Film next year if France decided to choose it as their nominee (unlikely). The rule is, I believe, that a film has to be released theatrically in its native country prior to October 1. BLUE opened in France on October 9, making it ineligible by about a week.

Redford didn't get nominated because he didn't campaign for the nomination. Very hard to get nominated in a crowded field if you don't make all the appearances and take out all the ads. This was a conscious decision on his part and he knew that by not doing it, he wouldn't be nominated. Fassbender took the same approach but Supporting Actor is less crowded.

I've been wondering something about all the campaigning in general. Are AMPAS members' memories really that short? Do they see all the movies with any sort of Oscar potential just like the critics do? Or do they skip stuff often? I feel like if everyone on the board just kept up with the releases during the year and jotted down anything that leapt out at them (acting, directing, cinematography, etc.), there wouldn't be a need for campaigning at all.

The NC-17 is most likely the problem as the only movie nominated that restrictive was Midnight Cowboy which I believe was X. There is though plenty of foreign language actors who have been nominated like Cottilard for La Vie en Rose and Emmanuelle Riva last year for Amour. There is an interesting list of actors who were nominated for foreign language acting.

Worst snub IMO was no Tom Hanks for best actor.

How about that song from that christian film that one heard of for best song. Then got revoke for some apparent reason. Maybe the academy doesn't like religious/christian films.

No, it was because the producer of the film broke the rules by trying to promote the song, so it's his own fault. Just as well as that song wasn't very good anyways.
