Great list as always, and I predicted 9 out of 10 movies correctly, 5 of them in the correct position! This seems like a good spot to plug the 2014 Edition of "So You Think You Know James?" I'll start the first post on Sat Jan. 11, so come one, come all!!!!! 8-)

Cool list James !

I still have to check a few of your entries. Comparing with my personal list at this point , the only film missing is American Hustle but I knew that you did not like it as much as I did so not surprises :)

Happy New Year and my best wishes for 2014!

Looking Forward to participate again in the Beat Berardinelli coming up contest 8-)

Great list as always James! Now I know what films I need to catch up on! But I really wish you'd go back to highlighting your favorites acting performances from the year; In years past, I've looked forward to that almost as much as seeing your Top 10s! :D

James, you gave more perfect scores this year than you had done in the last three years combined. Would you say 2013 was the best year of the decade so far or do you still think 2012 wins in terms of quantity?

And also have you seen The Past, Only God Forgives, Like Someone in Love and The Hunt? Just curious.£

I'll attack this sideways when I write up something about the Oscar nominations.

I have seen ONLY GOD FORGIVES and THE HUNT. Not the other two.

With its strong finish, I'd have to say 2013 overall comes close to 2012 but it seems to me that there was more of an avalanche of quality in the last 3 months of 2012 than in 2013. The top echelon of 2013 was stronger, however. My #1 of 2012 was LOOPER and, if I did a combined 2012-2013 list, that would come in at #3 (behind BEFORE MIDNIGHT, which is a Top 100 film, and GRAVITY, and ahead of WOLF OF WALL STREET).

Okay, will it be similar to how you did things back in the day when you'd list all the nominees and then your own separate list of the ones you felt were deserving?

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Only God Forgives, personally I think it's a highly underrated film and better then "Drive".

Mr. Berardinelli,

Why did you not include THE WAY WAY BACK among your Honorable Mentions? It is the only film from 2013 that you awarded 3.5 stars that does not appear in your Top Ten or Honorable Mentions. Was this an oversight, or there is a reason you no longer want to include THE WAY WAY BACK on a list of movies you highly recommend from 2013?

Thanks.

I elected to go with only five honorable mentions. THE WAY WAY BACK therefore just missed the proverbial cut.
