Post My Netflix queue is empty. Once again, I seek suggestions.
I did a thread like this nearly a year ago, and got lots of film recommendations my way. Some were really excellent, some were good, a few were middle-of-the-road, and few stinkers. Overall, I consider it a successful experiment. So it's time for Round 2. What should go into my Netflix queue? You decide.

This question is impossible to answer since I don't know what you've already seen and what your taste is.

Brief Encounter
13 Assassins
The Emperor’s New Groove
A Tale of Two Sisters
Eyes Without a Face

I've seen a lot of stuff over the years, but I've always been willing to watch just about anything. That's a broad answer, I know, but it is the way I am. I think good films can be found in all genres, all eras...so I'm very open.

A lot of great suggestions so far. I think that the next time I do this I'll pick a genre to be creative.

Conspiracy - 2001 HBO film about the Wannsee Conference and one of my favorite films ever. Stars Kenneth Branagh, Stanley Tucci, and Colin Firth.

Syriana - this is more well known, but it's another one of my favorites. Very intricate and well acted.

11:14 - little known indie in a sorta similar vein as Pulp Fiction, or perhaps Go, with a broken chronology and mixed subplots. It's not awesome, but it's a lot of fun and interesting to watch. Stars Patrick Swayze, Hillary Swank, Rachel Leigh Cook, and a whole bunch of people.

The Lookout - yet another interesting indie, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, before he was Joseph Gordon-Levitt. JGL is a young man with brain damage after a crash who is struggling to make ends meet, and starts working as a lookout for a gang of bank robbers. Also stars Jeff Daniels.

Once - Irish film about two street musicians that meet by chance and start making music together. This has turned into one of my favorite romantic films, plus it has a great soundtrack.

Maybe I'll come back with more later. Let me know if you've seen any of these.

Fellas, fellas. You can't just throw titles at a man. If he hasn't heard of the movie, then the title means nothing. He'd have to go research it (in which case he's doing the work that he asked you to do) based on whether it sounds interesting simply as a title. And if he has heard of the movie, then your recommendation isn't nearly as useful.

You have to explain (Thief, you're exempt from this lecture) why he should see the movie. So, in any case,

The Square (2008)

Nothing gets my heart a-racing like a good neo-noir. And Australian movies tend to be good when they're not comedic. So imagine an Australian neo-noir that builds a devious, twisty plotline made with such skill that you're never sure what's going to happen while always being kept exactly where the director wants you. And then there are some moments...well, never mind, but very few movies have made me yell out loud. This one did.

To Live (1994)

Everyone has seen and loved Raise the Red Lantern. Who can blame them? It's one of the best movies I've ever seen. But Zhang Yimou's To Live is almost as good. Not quite as lushly beautiful, but in its saga of a Chinese family trying to adapt, to endure -- to live -- during the tumult of war and revolution, it builds an amazingly powerful story.

Paper Moon (1973)

There are some subjects I find inherently interesting. Prisons, for one (more on that later). Also: con men! This tale from Peter-Bogdanovich-back-when-he-was-good of a con man and his (maybe) daughter grifting their way across the South is billed as a comedy, but it works just as well as a drama. The B/W cinematography is terrific and the movie is a delight from start to finish. I highly recommend it

Le Trou (1960)

I haven't seen anything else by this director (Jacques Becker) but his last film is a winner. A well-directed story about men in prison trying to escape, attempting to navigate shifting loyalties and the constant presence of the guards. Definitely a winner.

The First Time (2012)

A sensitive, likable movie about a couple who move tentatively towards their first sexual experience, this first feature from writer/director Jon (son of Lawrence) Kasdan shows that he didn't just benefit from nepotism.
