Oh, interesting: Since all your grades are As and Bs, does this mean 'Cannibal Holocaust' is bad or did you actually see merit in it? I'm asking because I've been intruiged by this notorious flick for ages but all I've read about it so far (on this board and elsewhere) are scathing condemnations, so I didn't make the extra effort to obtain a banned movie.

I've been planning to write something about it, but to be honest, I don't think the film was neither a masterpiece in social commentary nor inherently bad. I thought it was an average film with some genuinely intriguing elements on its plot (there's a bit of reverse narrative in how the plot unfolds) and some tension in it. That said, the acting leaves a lot to be desired and its content/message isn't that effective. The film tries to convey two separate messages: an analogy of the civilized vs. the uncivilized, and a critique on the media and exploitation. However, the former seems too tacked-on and in-your-face, while the latter can be considered paradoxical or hypocritical since the film engages in the same things it seems to criticize. But nevertheless, I was more or less engaged and don't regret watching it. If anything, what shocked me more were the actual animal killings which I found to be a bit tough to watch. At the very least, it's an interesting watch from a film buff perspective, but IMO, the film seems to have more reputation than it has reason to.

So when I do my September list, do I have to include all those 1 - 2 minute films TCM had on the other night? I'm tempted to include "The Great Train Robbery" (love), "Laughing Gas" (like) and "A Voyage to the Moon," (actually pretty awful, although I may have been spoiled by Hugo). My favorite, though, is the later short, "Happy Anniversary," which is heavily influenced by Jacques Tati and is hilarious.

To each his own, but I don't count many films under 50 minutes. Though I think I did for Sherlock Jr.

Was I the only one laughing at the Laughing Gas short? :D Laughter is indeed contagious.

Oh man I have to have one of those months. I've still never see Joan of Arc, the Passion Thereof or Metropolis. Or Ikiru. Or that masterpiece known as Kick-Ass.

9/15 Ship of Fools (6 of 10; Simone Signoret, Oskar Werner and Michael Dunn are great which brings this up to a passing grade; Vivien Leigh is awful.)
9/16 An Ideal Husband (1947) (6 of 10; the 1999 version is better. The actress playing Mrs. Cheveley is annoying.)
9/17 Captain Blood (1935) (7 of 10)

Slightly anemic month for me in terms of numbers, but there was a lot of Breaking Bad in the way, which is over 3, 000 minutes of narrative in itself. And I saw Superman theatrically, which is worth 10 movies for me. It is also the last of the movies from the top echelon of my theatrical screening bucket list.

And you have the pleasure of Marvin and Leigh having some scenes together, and being awful simultaneously. Although it's also a pleasure to see her beating the crap out him.
