Post Pawn Shop Chronicles Video Analysis
I think Pawn Shop Chronicles is the best movie of 2013 thus far. I just had to do a video analyzing its hidden themes. This is a detailed discussion of every part of the movie so you definitely should see it first. It's a dense flick; the Holy Motors of this year.

Really. I want to see it because I love Paul Walker (he's hilarious in the trailer), but a movie with such a pedigree that went straight to DVD set off alarm bells. How is he?

Pawnship Chronicles didn't go straight to DVD, it got a limited theatrical release. Besides, just cause a film goes straight to DVD dosen't automatically make it bad, there's plenty of good DTV films that deserved a theatrical release and plenty of theatrical release that should have gone straight to video. Walker is doing just fine considering that Fast And Furious is Universal's most succesful movie franchise of all time, so he's definitely going to be around for awhile.

I didn't exactly find it terrible or anything, but it certainly is not the best thing I've seen this year. The imdb rating of 5.5/10 is perhaps a little low; 6.5/10 is about right. This film has a lot of problems, not the least of which is FOCUS. The strongest "story" is probably the 2nd act (with the unforgettable "pyramid"), but really when seen as a whole it is more than a bit of a mess imo. The 3rd act's Elvis bit especially was pretty weak.

He has a lot of fun playing a caricature in this. Very funny.

It took two viewings for this segment to grow on me. The first time, I couldn't stop thinking about the second story, so I didn't stop to fully judge the third one. The first two stories are kind of like Psycho: a comical caper that turns into horror. Then the third is mostly a thematic reflection of the first two, making the viewer think about them in a different light.
