Post League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TV series--coming to FOX
There are so many ways that this is guaranteed to blow up in their faces that I'm in high suspense from trying to guess which one it will be.

In an effort to head Showtime’s very similar Penny Dreadful off at the pass, Fox is developing a series based around one of the original “public domain characters hangin’ out, feelin’ copyright-free” stories: Alan Moore’s The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which is being developed under a put pilot commitment at the network. Green Lantern (and soon-to-be Blade Runner 2) writer Michael Green is attached as showrunner for the nascent series, which, like the graphic novel it’s based on, sees literary icons like Captain Nemo, Allan Quatermain, the Invisible Man, and more forming a crime-fighting league, all while being extraordinarily polite.

Naturally, neither Moore nor illustrator Kevin O’Neill are involved with the series, Moore having long ago distanced himself from the poorly received 2003 film version (as well as pretty much all adaptations of his work). Still, presumably he’ll have a withering opinion on it soon. Should League make it to air, expect Fox to tackle its ABC competitor Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. head on, with ads playing up its series’ far classier use of gas lamps, not that vulgar electricity.

Sounds like it's going to flop big time, i''m pretty sure most of FOX's target demographic hasn't even heard of LOEG, and it sounds like it's going to be a pretty expensive show to produce, so even if it does get decent ratings, it might still get the axe for cost reasons like Terra Nova did.

Yeah, plus Fox has a habit of cancelling stuff for the most boggling of reasons. Phases of the moon, intercepted al Qaeda communiques, scattered goat innards, etc. Maybe they're trying to cancel The Simpsons and their fingers keep slipping and pushing the button on the wrong shows.

LOEG relies heavily on classic literary characters and obscure cultural references. It won't just be that the audience hasn't heard of the comic book--they very well might not have heard of any of this stuff, outside of maybe having seen the Looney Tunes episode with Jekyll and Hyde, plus other tidbits of cultural osmosis. It's a book for bright, imaginative kids who like to read. The CSI/Criminal Minds/House MD audience is going to reject it at the molecular level.

I realize I'm ranting by now, but if Disney had trouble pitching a Pirates of the Caribbean-ized version of The Lone Ranger to a contemporary audience, what is Fox supposed to do with Pulp Fiction-ized versions of Mina Murray, Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Fu Manchu, Moriarty, and all the rest? And how are they supposed to get Standards and Practices to approve of an opium-addicted Quatermain, a rapist version of the Invisible Man, and a version of Hyde who beats and tears people to a bloody pulp?

It just doesn't make any sense. Which is probably why Fox is doing it.
