geography is essential for suspense

In general, you're right. Suspense is one thing, but geography is certainly essential for participation. The clearer the geography, the more heightened awareness, the greater emotional cognizance the scene has. There are ways around the Michael Meyers example though. Sometimes you can create your own geography. In Die Hard 5, by distilling the geography down to just cars, Moore creates a kind of friction-based geography. We may not understand anything about the Moscow environment, but we can see where the cars are in relation to one another.

Still, in a lot of cases clear geography, understanding the environment in which the action is set, is essential to emotional effect. I never thought of that before, but I think it's true. When people say a story has to be grounded, perhaps they mean it literally.

The "Ronin" inspired car chases in the Bourne trilogy - as mentioned before - aren't too shabby.
I actually love the car chases in "Drive".

I liked the car chase in "Identity" but IMO the one in Supremacy was mostly ruined by the awful shaky-cam, and I can't recall if the one in Ultimatum was any good or not. For me "Legacy" actually had the best car chase in the series.

The editing is awful in the one in Supremacy, too.

I always liked the car chase in The Bank Dick, but I don't think that's what the OP was looking for.

The Mini Cooper chase in the Italian job remake was also pretty good.

I remember a film in which a bus couldn't go under a certain SPEED, and if it went under a certain SPEED, then it would blow up.

I think it was called, the bus that couldn't slow down.

The remake may have been good (no doubt), but the origional is far superior.
Even the music with it is excellent, "Self Preservation Society".
Any of the bond films that had Rémy Julienne have very good chase scenes
Jean-Claude Lagniez and Bud Ekins are also worthy of mention

I prefer the one about the killer robot driving instructor who goes back in time for some reason.
