Post Vanilla Sky
Profound, or a profound mess.

After 10+ years I still can't decide

I liked it. Not profound exactly though. Good film, but not great. 7.5/10.

I thought it was a cinematic abortion.

Cameron Crowe was totally the wrong choice for this. I mean, a guy who does virtually nothing but coming-of-age dramedies? :? Having Noah Taylor come in and try to explain everything at the end only made matters worse. Honestly, the best thing about it for me was the title song Paul McCartney wrote for it. I think this was about the time I really started being put off by Tom Cruise. Since then, I've seen his 2 Spielberg collaborations ("Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds") and that's about it. I'm seeing considering "Oblivion," though, although I'm still largely on the fence about it. :|

Being a huge fan of Aménabar's original version, I just can't disengage myself from that. So, to me, Vanilla Sky pales when compared to the original. I still like a few things that Crowe brought to the table, but overall, he dropped the ball.

In soem ways I like it that Crowe tried to branch out with this one. However, I have to agree he really wasn't the right fit for this material.

I found it to be entertaining but fairly forgettable and a definite comedown after Almost Famous. The best thing about it was the REM song "All The Right Friends" on the soundtrack

My patience for him started running out around the time of the Oprah Couch incident. Since tehn I've seen a few movies he's been in.

I liked it. It's good to see Cameron Diaz go insane.

I'm not much of a fan of Crowe by definition, but even taking into account its faults (of which there are a few, no doubt) I have to admire the scale of ambition of Vanilla Sky.

Any film that attempts to give such a deep insight into our existence and how we perceive it through our experiences is worth a quiet nod in my books. I'll always defend it against the its stongest detractors for the fact that it really does swing for the fences and holds precious little back.

It's out there like few films in the past 10 years, and although its perfectly legitmate to attack the execution, you must see its ultimately noble intent.

Personally I really like it...almost in spite of itself.

Diaz' performance is one of the few improvements I think the remake has over the performance of whatshername in the original.
