I agree, I think that applies to even the best Bond movies. I don't think there's ever a point where you're truly meant to take the characters and situations 100% seriously. There's always a self-awareness...except at really low points.

That's a tradition that goes back even to the books. I remember reading that Fleming's intention from square one was to create the ultimate spy character, suggesting that he had an awareness of the genre norms that preceded him and that he was commenting on the genre as he saw it. The novels and movies are self-consciously spy stories, almost in the same sense that Pulp Fiction is self-consciously a crime story. To borrow from Paul Schrader, a James Bond story always has quotation marks around it.

Real spies are maybe a little less colorful and noisy, but that doesn't usually make for great entertainment.

Yes, self-awareness - one of the reasons Skyfall was the bomb.

"The Bomb" does mean "good" doesn't it? It's been a while since I brushed up on my street.

Usually it does mean good, though saying "bombed" means it's bad.

And an example:

"Pulp Fiction was The Bomb. But Pearl Harbor was a bomb".

Back to the topic of Bond, I saw Skyfall last night and I have to say I wasn't as impressed as most people. Better than Quantum of Solace, for sure, but not better than Casino Royale.
