Ridley Scott was great once. Perhaps with a great collaborator, he can be again. Cormac McCarthy is pretty damn great.

New Coen Brothers? I'm there.

I'll be first in line for new Scorsese as always, but it does give me pause that he's going back to the crime/backdoor dealings genre, which I think people incorrectly perceive as fundamental to his work. I hope he's not buying into that perception. He's capable of anything, and the absolute cream of his catalog is a smorgasbord of subject matter.

My enthusiasm for Man of Steel has been growing steadily ever since it was announced. I'm almost confident enough to say that everyone should have it on their list in this thread... almost. Take this with a grain of salt and don't get mad at ol' Ken for steering you wrong, but I think it's going to be a highlight of the year.

Vexer, I find your antipodean lists very helpful. ;)

Do you by any chance wear Converse shoes?

At the end of 2012, I started a thread on this forum entitled Any Early Predictions for 2014 Oscar Contenders?. Here is the list of titles I came up with:

42
Ain't Them Bodies Saints
August: Osage County
Beautiful Creatures
Before Midnight
The Bling Ring
Blood Ties
The Butler
Captain Phillips
Carrie
The Counselor
The Dallas Buyers' Club
Decoding Annie Parker
Devil's Knot
Diana
Don Jon's Addiction
Ender's Game
Elysium
The Falling
Foxcatcher
Gambit
Grace of Monaco
Gravity
The Great Gatsby
Her
Imogene
I'm So Excited!
Inside Llewyn Davis
James Gray
Jane Got a Gun
jOBS
Kill Your Darlings
Knight of Cups
Labor Day
Last Vegas
Long Walk to Freedom
A Long Way Down
Malavita
Nebraska
Nightingale
Nina
Odd Thomas
Oldboy
Only God Forgives
Out of the Furnace
Oz: The Great and Powerful
Pacific Rim
The Place Beyond the Pines
The Railway Man
Saving Mr. Banks
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Serena
Side Effects
Snowpiercer
The Spectacular Now
Star Trek: Into Darkness
Stoker
Therese Raquin
Trance
Twelve Years a Slave
Untitled David O. Russell Project
Untitled Woody Allen Project
A Quiet Passion
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Young and Prodigious Spivet
The Zero Theorem

Note that this is just a list of the Oscar contenders for this year. It does not include any blockbuster titles (Iron Man 3, Man of Steel), save for Star Trek: Into Darkness. There are also many festival titles on here that may not get a wider release until 2014.

As someone who often gets to visit film festivals and attend advance screenings, I think that 2013 will be a fairly safe year for the Academy, very much in the vein of 2011. Many challenging, thought-provoking films (Drive, Melancholia, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Martha Marcy May Marlene) will be ignored in favor of more traditional, albeit less ambitious works (The Artist). This year, Saving Mr. Banks and The Monuments Men should fit that latter niche.

This gives me a great idea.
