Post Which is the best "Going Native" film?
In the past two decades we've seen three epics grace the screen that had a remarkably similar premise -- Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, and Avatar. In all three films a man, somehow down or disillusioned with life, finds himself drawn more to the native culture he's ostensibly the enemy of than to the decadent culture he's actually a part of. All three got various levels of attention at Oscar time, all three were over 2.5 hours long, and all three feature some stunning sequences.

WIth that said, however, they're all different movies and I was wondering which one people find to be best? For me, I'll go with Dances with Wolves. The Last Samurai is marred by a bit of a cop-out ending (actually, make that a full-blown cop-out ending) and Avatar is hurt by the fact that it has no real historical tradition to draw upon. Plus Sam Worthington.

I like them in the order that they came out and are listed in the poll.

My position on The Last Samurai is that it unfairly got a lot of crap for being the same movie as Dances With Wolves (it wasn't) and that it made a white man the titular last samurai (it didn't). I haven't seen it since its theatrical run, but I thought it was really good, even if it played pretty fast and loose with the accuracy of the time period it was set in.

And hey, Ken Watanabe is in it!

I like Sam Worthington. I thought he was terrific in Terminator Salvation and The Debt.

As for my pic: The Last Samurai easily. I LOVE that movie to death!

Oh wow I thought he was utterly terrible in Terminator Salvation. And that's when I had no idea who he was. I just heard this terrible, terrible attempt at an American accent and didn't know whether to laugh or cry
