Surprised that "Casino Royale" is not ranked as the best that Bond can offer.

I mirror that surprise, but tastes differ across the board here. It's cool that JB liked the film regardless of where it lies in his ranking of Bond films. I was going to see this film anyway because I always watch Bond films when they release (though in the case of the Moore films, I wish I didn't now), but getting the positive vibes is making me feel more comfortable with the decision.

Was it the best blockbuster of the year over TDKR and The Avengers in your opinion?

I think Skyfall is superior to Casino Royale. I was a Craig sceptic, but he is much more comfortable in the role here. I still think he has problems with Bond's suaveness and humour.

James, what does Skyfall need for a 4-star review?

Yeah, I am glad that Skyfall is getting really positive buzz. Even though "Quantum of Solace" was a middling entry, I did like his relationship with Olga Kurylenko. To me, Bond is more interesting when he doesn't slobber over every hot woman he meets. It doesn't seem as though they continue the trend of a more celibate Bond for "Skyfall," but it nonetheless seems to follow the spirit of the previous two films.

Post Re: SKYFALL
I saw this the other day early. I don't know if I'd rate it quite as high as James did, but I will at least say it's a good Bond movie. It's better than "Quantum of Solace", but I think more screenings will help me determine if it's better than "Casino Royale" and let me have a more definite opinion of the film.

There's a lot to like here. Like with Connery and Moore, Craig seems settled into the role of Bond by his third film. Judi Dench, Ralph Finnes, Javier Bardem, the new kid playing Q, etc. are all in good form. The action is good and miles above the shaky-cam stuff of "Quantum". Sam Mendes did a good job and Roger Deakin's photography is top-notch as usual.

So really all in all "Skyfall" is a solid Bond film. Though it will take time to determine how it's ranked among all the Bond films (it won't be near the bottom I'm sure).

James,

I know this is off-topic, but will you be doing a Reelthoughts column on the Disney/Lucasfilm deal?

You've always been pretty opinionated on the world of "Star Wars".

Sounds great, I can't wait!

The only bummer I see is the return to the ancient PPK with its tiny magazine and sadly underpowered ammunition choices. It's also too bad that Amy Winehouse is no longer with us to handle the theme, but what can you do?

As for Casino Royale, it was just too long, period. To me it almost felt as though the producers could have made two films from everything we saw and experienced in Casino Royale. Also, Chris Cornell is great, was great in Audioslave and Soundgarden, but he is simply not the sort of artist that should be laying down 007 themes.

Hope you're not a believer in the Mayan prophecy James!

Hey James, could you please explain why Skyfall isn't released globally at the same time like other blockbusters, Avatar, The Dark Knight, TDK Rises etc? Is there some set rule that certain studio's need to abide by? We don't get films like The Master until about three months after it's release, but something as mainstream as Skyfall doesn't make sense to me. I read in the forum here that it was released in the U.K. a week ago; here it comes out 22nd November. For a movie event of this magnitude, wouldn't the powers in charge make the most profit by releasing it at the same time, or is it purely because, “Recent Bond movie openings have not been events.”

1. Skyfall
2. TDKR
3. The Avengers

Of those three, the only top 10 slam-dunk is Skyfall, although the other two could make it - depends on what comes out in the next seven weeks.

I've been kicking a few things around, but the reality is that I don't have a lot to say on the subject. That will change once rumors start leaking about the actual movies but, at this point, I'm in a wait-and-see mode.

But I still may write something short.

Wish I could explain what to me seem to be illogical decisions about staggered release dates. "Piracy" is usually cited by the studios, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

So what would be James' Bottom 5 Bond films?

I know we've got four down:

1. Live and Let Die
2. Octopussy
3. The Living Daylights
4. Die Another Day

What would be #5?

My vote would be The Man With The Golden Gun.

[Reveal] Spoiler: Incidentally (mild spoiler)
Bond's "Scottish" mansion, Skyfall, was actually a facade built on Hankley Common in Surrey, England. It's about 10 miles from my house.

James, do you think Skyfall could be a contender for a major Oscar? Best Picture? Director? Actor/Actress?

About the release date, James Bond has always been showing at many other countries first before USA. Thailand for example has mostly 1 week or more in advance of USA since The World is Not Enough.

I love Skyfall, but I still would put Casino Royale ahead of it. Better constant tension throughout the film (Skyfall has a tiny bit of lull in the middle), more impactful ending, and the opening action of Casino Royale is still incredible.

Great movie, wouldn't even compare it to Avengers or Batman though!

I first heard the theme song when I arrived in Scotland for my daughter's 2nd birthday (beginning of October). By the time the movie came out, I was tempted to walk out of the screen for five minutes when the opening credits started. I've heard it at least once a day at work on the radio and at this point I cannot stand it. I cannot stand Adele at the best of times (lol wat, Adele?) and I honestly think a better singer could have been hired for this job. And song writer for that matter (nothing ruins a moody song like a 'quirky' backing vocal).
