I came across this link which I thought some of you may enjoy. Sight & Sound is I believe the longest running organized critics poll(started 1952) In 1992 they started polling directors as well(publishing a separate list for them)

Here are their lists throughout the years(you can see how Chaplin's stock fell over the years, Keaton's rose, when Citizen Kane's stock started rising, when Vertigo & The Searchers started being re-evaluated, etc)

also you can see what specific directors & critics(tarantino, ebert) submitted as their top 10 for the 2002 poll(its held every 10 years) if you click around there. And you can see the votes totals for every film that received a vote that year, who voted for each film, etc.

Much has been written about this poll over the years.

It's interesting how some films take a few years to acquire status and how others have gained in respect as well. Others have only recently been discovered. maybe the demise of the concerned director has something to do with it?

Vertigo does seem to have been a film that is gaining respect over the decades. I was disappointed the first time I saw it and with each viewing (over ten) it keeps going up my personal all time list. I think upon first viewing many people expect something like rear Window of North By Northwest, or even Psycho. Yet it now appears so much richer than these films.

I have read that Tokyo Story was only really discovered in the west about twenty years ago?

Our local newspaper film critic flies the flag for Passion of Joan of Arc. I watched it a couple of years ago and could not stop thinking about it. Simply amazing. It's on Criterion.

I love this list though, because if you see the full version it's atreasure trove of viewing inspiration.

If Seven Samurai were to weasel its way back in there (in addition to an inclusion of some Scorsese film), the list might be a little better. I hate top 10 lists, though, when they encompass a selection of cinema that is so diverse and good that it's basically impossible to note essentials. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lord of the Rings on there in three years.

The top Scorsese movie sits at 35.

As for LOTR. I would be shocked if it ever made a top 10 list of film critics. When you stand back and look at this amazing list it would be a very hard case to claim that it deserves to be in there.

I'm surprised at the number of votes for Touch of Evil for some reason. Oh well, no Scorsese or another thirty years at least. XD I'm glad to see Man With the Movie Camera has a decent number of votes.

It certainly does, it was only 5 votes behind Kane in this poll! Could we be in for a 'dethroning' in 2012? Kane was 14 votes ahead of the #2 in the directors poll.

Hey calvero, you might also find the 1000 Greatest movies at They Shoot Pictures interesting. They compile their ranking using every top movie list they can find. The Sight & Sound poll weighs heavily on their ranking.

Btw, why the hell did Tarantino submit 12 films? More importantly why did the BFI count all 12? I like him, but he shouldn't get special treatment.

ha, I was think the same thing. but 8 of the 12 films he listed only got one vote in the entire poll, so I don't think it really affected the integrity of the poll.

I've only seen around 450. Lots of foreign/silent films among those 550 I haven't seen.

Glad that you all found it useful. It's just about the best list I've come across.

FYI, if you browse around you'll notice they also have a list of the Greatest Films of the 21st century which is also a really nice read.
