Just like poor Lyndon Fucking Johnson. That man destroyed his own party to bring an avalanche of rights to African Americans. And he gets remembered for Vietnam while bloody Kennedy gets credit for being a crusader when he was an ineffectual weakling and LBJ made the sixties. *Sigh*

I've often summed up LBJ as a difficult president to analyze, because his record is light night and day. On the one hand, his domestic policy is among the greatest in American history. LBJ is certainly the greatest domestic-policy president post-WWII. But his foreign policy decisions were absolutely awful, and have rightly been remembered as such.

I'm an apologist for his foreign policy inasmuch as he continued (or intensified, to be fair) the policy established by his two predecessors.

I think this is the closest thing we've ever had to a flame war. And it's about dead people.

Ronald Reagan. He wasn't that good of a president. Hell, the image of Reagan we have today is so different from the president Reagan actually was. I know because I lived through it. Scary part is that most people either don't know or are willfully ignorant.

I lived through it too and couldn't disagree more. Maybe pissing on people's graves is part of the getting over it process.

Recall that in 1981 Reagan laid off a bunch of striking PATCO air traffic controllers. My father was one of them. I know a few conservatives who agree that that was union busting pure and simple

Reagan wasn't Washington reincarnated as some people seem to believe. However, he was a lot better than the dickhead that was in there between 2001-2008.

In some ways Reagan and Clinton were alike. Both served two full terms in the face of opposition, both administrations wracked by scandal.

As far as GW Bush goes, basic fact: He was a figurehead more or less. It was Karl Rove and Dick Cheney that were making all the major decisions.

What forum have you been POSTING on for three years?!?

P.S. - Reagan was a bastard, but know who was worse? Barack Obama. The model of pretend progress. "Hey, I'm literate and relatable, and I'm part of one of the only two parties that you dumbshit stupid fat ass Americans vote for out of sheer simplicity every four years to help you forget the hole you ignorant pieces of garbage have been digging from step 1 of your useless pathetic lives."

Agreed. And Dubya left one hell of a mess.

And Obama is taking heat for Congress' ineptitude despite the fact that it's not entirely his fault. There's a group of fanatical Republicans who are stopping everything that could help people like their constituents simply because they want Obama out of office. And people keep them in office because they know how to play the conservatives: use fire and brimstone to speak to their desire for passion and use simple words because they are, by and large, uneducated. The fat cat businessmen will vote for them anyway because they have these asses in their pockets to begin with.

HIPSTERS!

To everyone who worships Wes Anderson, buys everything second hand even though they can afford Gap and H&M, drinks PBR, and talks about how ironic or underground they are:

Please, get over yourselves. No one cares about how indie you are. It's annoying. I don't care if it's "cool" or not to like "Titanic." If you like something, you like it. And all this shit about living your life ironically? PUH-LEEZE! You're a moron who spouts liberal jargon despite having absolutely no knowledge about what youre talking about. You define yourself be being "not mainstream," but there are millions of other morons who are doing the same thing, so that makes you (gasp!) MAINSTREAM!

Seriously, just go away and see a therapist so you can join the rest of normal society. You're all a bunch of douches.

You're correct in saying that LBJ continued the policy established by Ike/JFK. But he made the situation much, much worse. Much worse. That's why I think LBJ deserves a good share of the blame for Vietnam.

If you haven't read it, I'd recommend a book called The Best And The Brightest by David Halberstam. It's a fascinating read about the decision-making that surrounded the Vietnam War, and one of the best books ever written about the war. It's essential reading.

Agreed on The Best And The Brightest. Ironically it was Eisenhower who started the process. I say ironically because he warned about such a possibility in his farewell address ("the military industrial complex"). Kennedy escalated it. I don't know if he would have pulled out totally as Oliver Stone suggests in JFK. But I think he realized that Asian land wars are impossible to win. Under LBJ American involvement did reach its peak so yes LBJ deserves a good share of the responsibility for it.

Post Re: Things everyone just needs to get over and be done with
Baby Boomer Nostalgia.

A few years ago a local casino ran an ad on some radio stations. The ad went something like this:

"Do you remember when Pink was Floyd, the only Idol was in Billy blah blah blah"

That ad was obviously targeted at nostalgic baby boomers. Many of whom feel that rock and roll died out when disco became popular. Many of whom seem to feel that the 60s were it and everything since has been downhill.

The 60s in one snese were a great decaade in one snese as the civil rights movement proves. On the other hand, there was also the specter of Vietnam and 3 major asassinations. The 60s did have some great music, any decade that gave us the Beatles, Sly And The Family Stone, The Who and The Stones, Motown, Stax and CCR can't be dismissed. On the other hand don't forget what the number one song of 1969 was: Sugar Sugar.

So no, the 60s weren't a happy and innocent time although good things did happen in that decade. No, rock and roll does not stop at 70s AOR or 80s pop metal. No, everything that's happened since the Boomer era is not a pale imitation of what happened in the Boomer era. No, the Boomers did not invent the wheel. Get over it Boomers and move on.

The Wigger Subculture:

Specifically those who think that buying the latest black fashion, cutting their hair in the latest black style and listening to (Young Jeezy/Soulja Boy/50 Cent) makes them black.

No, taking the most superficial and limited part of the street culture does not do that.

This is not meant as an attack on white people who like hip-hop and take the time to understand it and understand the culture as a whole. It's on those who think that just taking the most superficial elements and claiming that you are makes you so. It doesn't. The wigger subculture needs to get over it and themselves as soon as possible.

Obama worse then Reagan? Wow, you REALLY need to have your head examined if you actually believe that crap! If it weren't for his health care reform, I probably wouldn't even have health insurance right now, and while he could've done better in some areas, he's still done a hell of alot more then Bush has done, what did he accomplish, that awful "No Child Left Behind" act that hurt far more schools then it helped? Another Vietnam situation with Iraq and Afghanistan, are you seriously saying we would've been better off with John McCain? That guy was a terrible choice no matter how you look at it, , and Romney looks an even WORSE choice, he's such a fucking hypocrite, in the beginning he was for abortion and it was health care bill which "Obamacare"(A name I truly hate BTW) was based on, and of course he turned his back on all that just to get the nomination, if he gets elected, we are so fucked it's not even funny.

That The Simpsons is no longer a good show. This has been true for over a decade now and yet every time I'm talking about the show someone has to bring it up. The next time somebody's talking about the Civil War I'm going to let them know that Lincoln's dead because that's just as useful

This also applies to the "Metallica sucks now" argument.

Well I still like The Simpsons, as for Metallica, I definitely won't defend that shitfest that it is St. Anger, I can't think of a worse album then that one, but Death Magnetic was a pretty good return to reform.

Personally i'm sick and tired of hearing people throw the "marriage is sacred" argument every time there's a debate over gay marriage, I really hate to break it to you, but there's nothing sacred about marriage, matter of fact marriage was originally just a way of gaining property and money, love wasn't really a big part of it, and today you see all these celebrities getting married and divorced in a matter of months/weeks, so I really don't see how marriage is sacred in the least, two people of the same sex marrying shouldn't have a damn thing to do with anything sacred, they should just be able to do it. Also that Leviticus bible verse that everyone keeps quoting isn't saying that god is against homosexuality(in fact the word homosexuality wasn't even added to the bible until the 1960s) so quit acting like it is.

On Metallica:

Death Magnetic really was a return to form. Sadly, I doubt many people cared after the whole Napster/St. Anger fiasco.
