Things everyone just needs to get over and be done with
Do you know what I'm talking about? The things that society, the media, etc., won't drop. The stuff they just won't let go to the point where it's really, really annoying. I'll give an example:
The Titanic
The ship sank 100 years ago. I don't need to be continually reminded about it every anniversary, or at every chance the media gets. It was a boat. It sank. Not the first time that's ever happened. The Titanic should be treated more like the War of 1812 - something nobody really cares about.
So what say you? What are some things that people just need to get over, just let go? Post 'em.

Re: Things everyone just needs to get over and be done with
I saw a really tasteless billboard for a Titanic exhibit at a museum near here. The billboard was deliberately tilted to put the ship at an angle and the slogan said "See what's going down!"
Kind of makes you wonder how 9/11 shit will be advertised 100 years from now. "Great savings on commemorative 9/11 bottle openers! We're BURNING money here! You'll JUMP for our great deals!"
Anyway, I'm not at all bothered that historical stuff gets brought up over and over again. The past is important to remember, particularly for a country such as ours that has a pitiful amount of history. It deserves a lot more focus than much of the nonsense that passes for society and culture here.
What really needs to die is the perennial insistence on the two-party system, coupled with endless bitching... about the two-party system. Folks should not complain (however rightly) about how horrible something is if they insist on keeping it alive. This actually goes for a lot of stuff in our current politic-o-sphere.
Another thing I could stand to see the end of is the exploitation of creative people by the entertainment industry, and specifically the fact that consumers don't give a shit as long as they get whatever CD, comic book, or movie they want. I expect rich-ass-motherfuckers to be heartless and conniving. On the other hand, it's a disappointment to see the same mentality in regular people.
Also, stores that close early just because it's the last half hour and there aren't any customers currently around. Hell of an annoying business practice.

Well I think we really should get over it and face it: there will be a few important historical facts we will never know. Forget trying to figure who really shot JFK, if the unnecessary Vietnam war was an inevitable chain of unfortunate events or planned by greedy and evil people, if 911 was an inside job etc. This is for all folks who are obsessed with conspiracy theories, posting all kinds of B.S. on YouTube and the likes. I say: let go, we will never know.

-All reality TV shows...everyone involved in creating any of these should burn in hell for all eternity.
-Treating celebrity news like real news...I hear all day long about some drunk celebrity punching a photographer, but the bus of people that were killed in Germany I have to read in obscure wordly news reports somewhere.

Sept. 2038 you will be able to go to the National Archives and learn what the CIA and FBI knew about the murder of JFK. It's "only" 26 years away...

Agreed, the only reality TV shows I actually like are the ones with Gordon Ramsay, but I want to strangle whoever came up with the idea for the first "Real Housewives" show. I'm sick of hearing people obsessed over celebrity news too, hell even celebrities like Charlie Sheen have commented on how ridiculous it is , his words: "we've got two wars going on, an uprising in Egypt and all you people care about is my shit?" Most of those celebrity stories are either exaggerated or outright lies anyways, Star Magazine's "sources" are complete bullshit half the time, yet people eat up they're stories like candy

Here's another one:
Ronald Reagan. He wasn't that good of a president. Hell, the image of Reagan we have today is so different from the president Reagan actually was. I know because I lived through it. Scary part is that most people either don't know or are willfully ignorant.

Re: Things everyone just needs to get over and be done with
It is interesting how history passes judgment. Reagan is all but a saint, yet (for example) Gerald Ford is remembered basically as an ineffectual oaf.
Ford pardoned Nixon with the rationale that Americans had already suffered enough social struggle during that era. Getting Nixon out of the headlines as soon as possible would spare the country the hardship and cynicism of years of debate over its former leader's illegal activities. Ford did so with the full understanding that it would be a severely unpopular move, likely ruinous to his public image.
Whether he was right or wrong for his decision, he believed that his own career was worth sacrificing to speed up the country's healing process. How many presidents who lived during our lifetimes can you imagine doing that?

Just like poor Lyndon Fucking Johnson. That man destroyed his own party to bring an avalanche of rights to African Americans. And he gets remembered for Vietnam while bloody Kennedy gets credit for being a crusader when he was an ineffectual weakling and LBJ made the sixties. *Sigh*

I wish informed (read: moronic, arrogant, self-loathing, desperately cynical) 'critics' would stop jabbing Schindler's List for having maybe one or two weak moments at the end, and ignoring the comparable 3/4 of unimpressive material that inhabits very fictional Holocaust film not named The Pianist.
I think people should stop talking about how, after LeBron James won his championship, that Phil Spires is the best player in the world without a ring. This monkey's getting heavy. GET ME HAKEEM OLAJUWON'S PHONE NUMBER!
I wish women would stop making things so hard and just schedule sex. Or maybe they should start making things MORE hard. GET IT?! YEAH SUGAR MOMMA BABY. Oh, great, now my Celtics jersey has mayonnaise on it - and nothing else.
Also, Ed needs to stop looking for places to bury aameen's emaciated remains (he looks like 2010 Patrick Swayze at this point - what, too early?) and start posting about basketball again. I demand it.

Re: Things everyone just needs to get over and be done with
I've often summed up LBJ as a difficult president to analyze, because his record is light night and day. On the one hand, his domestic policy is among the greatest in American history. LBJ is certainly the greatest domestic-policy president post-WWII. But his foreign policy decisions were absolutely awful, and have rightly been remembered as such.

I lived through it too and couldn't disagree more. Maybe pissing on people's graves is part of the getting over it process.

Don't even get my mom started on Reagan, she despised him for widening the gap between the rich and lower class.

Reagen was the start of the deregulation of corporate america, the process by which this country will be destroyed unless it is dealt with, and we are continuing to proceed in the EXACT opposite direction.
American's in the 1920's, and the 1820's, were smart enough to recognize how bad this is.
Idiocracy lives in America. Thank Reagen for initiating it.
