For whatever reason, when I first clicked on the link to the review, for a split second, only the half-star loaded on the page. Thus, I originally thought you gave this film 0.5*/****. Even if the film was awful, that'd probably be the most surprising rating ever.

In all seriousness, though, I'm a little tired of white people going to foreign countries and realizing how pretty they are. I know that's probably not what The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about, but man if the trailer didn't make it seem that way.

Sometimes too much inoffensiveness is a chore.

Why white people specifically?

We finally got this movie here and I am not sure that I understand the sentence if the people think they are pretty or they think the country is pretty. You must really hate the Lonely Planet tv show then or the whole Discovery Channel. The film when you actually watch it is fairly contrived as how everyone ends up but it does succeed in showing that feeling of being a stranger in a strange land.It is more or less a quaint travelogue for Accidental Tourists like myself that like seeing places without having to fly there. The way different cultures meet that pass ideas and knowledge back and forth and each character reacts and changes(or not)to their new environment is a universal angle.Culture shock is a very hard thing to put on film as you can't capture that overwhelming feeling of everything looking and sounding different from your home country and navigating in a new language, social and cultural norms. It made me think how would I handle living in a new exotic place and would I do it better or worse than the characters on screen.

Saw this movie tonight and I found it to be a really lovely movie actually. I think I would basically describe the movie as a coming of age tale for senior citizens. Anyway, I must admit that around the 40 minute I wasn't really feeling the movie by the time the movie was two thirds of the way done, I was totally caught up in to it and found it to be very moving. The movie even manages to redeem Bill Nghy's bitchy and annoying wife in the end by giving her some depth. And it's not all about the senior citizen group either. There's even a sweet sup plot involving Dev Patel's character and how he has to finally stand up to his overbearing mother and stand up for his girlfriend in front of her, who is against them going out. I think this is Judi Dench's best performance ever, at least from what I've seen. Although this is a true ensemble work, she's probably the closest thing this movie has to a lead. Tom Wilkinson has always been one of my favorite actors and he gives a really moving performance as a guy who comes to India to search for his past. I've never really been a HUGE fan of Maggie Smith (she's okay, but she's never wowed me) but she is great here too. And Patel is fun and his girlfriend in the movie is smokin' HOT! Not quite as hot as Friedo Pinto but damn close! And of course, the movie LOOKS great too. Stunning photographed.

Last year director John Madden gave us what I thought was one of last year's best and most unsung movies, the terrific spy thriller The Debt. He once again delivers, giving us a totally different but in it's own way equally wonderful movie! He also made Proof a few years back with Gwyneth Paltrow, Hope Lang, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anthony Hopkkns and I thought THAT was an incredible too! He's definitely becoming a favorite of mine.

My favorite movie of the summer thus far and second favorite movie of the year.

I honestly cant fault this movie much. Will probably make an effort to watch it a second time when it's on dvd.
