Post Re: MEN IN BLACK III
I've heard one reason Jones has such a small amount of screen time was because he wanted to have a reduced role. I believe he was hesitant on doing another MIB picture so to please him he was given a high salary and had the time travel angle put in to reduce his role and yet keep K around with Josh Brolin in place. I do think there shouldn't be an MIB 4. I mean Jones isn't getting any younger, hiding his aging with bad makeup isn't helping and it's obvious he's tired of the franchise.

After writing my own review, I clicked on your link from Metacritic. As I read your review, I pointed at the screen and started shouting out loud,"Yes! Exactly! Thank you!" at this:

Quote:
In fact, the screenplay feels frustratingly incomplete, with significant plot points left unresolved. (What it is the "big moment" that changes K? And please don't tell me it's the lame thing that happens near the end.)

Because this is what I wrote:

Quote:
J asks K what happened to make him so surly. M.I.B.-3 is essentially a detective story, but tracking down Boris is merely chasing after a MacGuffin. The real mystery of M.I.B-3 is what made K the way he is. If the film offers any explanation at all--and I'm not convinced it does--it scarcely passes muster.

And hello Mr. B.

Woah Woah, a couple of people have sneaked in sly criticisms of Ghostbusters 2 here... thought you'd get away with it too did you? :P

Ken I think you should do your Bay writing rant, as I don't think I'm familiar with it...

Am I really in the minority of liking MIB2? MIB1 is on TV so often I look forward to MIB2 actually, probably partly cause I like seeing Lara Flynn Boyle's tight stomach.

I was interested in MIB3 til I read JBs review.. and then I read Eberts and I wonder if Ebert is just a wind-up toy of platitudes these days.

Were there ever any good CGI in any of these MIB movies?

A sequel to I Robot? Can someone please incapacitate Akiva Goldman before the writing starts?

I like MIB2 as well, but the story is a bit too disjointed, (Barry Sonenfield admitted that even he had no clue what the light of Zartha was). I thought the CGI in this film was pretty good, not Avengers good, but still pretty impressive, especially the timejump sequence.

I didn't even like MiB2 when I was 7, and I liked everything when I was 7.

OK, so I went to see the movie yesterday and I quite liked it. It's not as fun or original as the first installment, but it's better than the second part and certainly not as horrible as James says. The special effects are quite good, Smith is as charismatic as always, Brolin does an amazing impression of a young Tommy Lee Jones, and... well, it was funny and fun. So yeah, there are a couple of plot holes and forced moments, but overall it wasn't awful. It was a pretty serviceable summer blockbuster, actually.

I just can't see why James was so angry with this movie.... =/

I'm guessing because Nolan and Wheadon have now shown us that there is just no excuse... ;)

Yes. But I am too.

My only problem with MIB2 was the ending felt rushed and abrupt. But otherwise, I enjoyed it.

Liked this a lot too. In fact, I actually liked this more than the first one. Will Smith and Josh Brolin were both awesome. And I actually felt the ending was rather touching.

Out of curiosity, what do you MIB2 fans have to say about the egregious product placement in MIB2? The whole movie was practically a goddamn billboard for so many products.

Meh, most films made for the past few decades have at least some product placement, and I don't remember anything in MIB2 being particularly noticable, though that's probably because New York has a ton of advertising everywhere anyways, for anything set in present day NY, you expect to see at least some form of product placement, so it's a case of Reality Is Unrealistic. Product placement dosen't really bother me, it's just not that big a deal.

I'm with Sebastian here. The movie was a good time, Josh Brolin was great, the sixties were fun, Jemaine Clement made a terrific villain, and I left with a smile on my face. It's not "The Avengers" and it's not "Batman" but not very many movies are. We can argue back and forth about plot holes or no plot holes but I think it was a fun, undemanding summer movie.

Yeah, I love the movies of Nolan and Whedon, but we just can't compare EVERY blockbuster to their work. Plus, at least it wasn't as dumb and loud as movies like the Transformers ones or even Battleship.

Sure we can! Nolan has just fed the superhero genre a reality sandwich and Wheadon has ditched reality on a flying aircraft carrier. Two extremes to be sure but both perfect examples of how it's done. Hyperbole? Probably, but who has done it better lately?

Okay actually I think Chronicle came pretty close... it was outstanding!

They shouldn't have brought him back for the 2nd film in the first place. Sure, he had good chemistry with Will Smith in the original, but they had told his story in that film. Bringing him back for the sequel just trashed the happy ending his character got in the original. To me, that's a prime example of the worst thing a sequel can do--diminish the previous movie.

Yeah, you know as much as I love Tommy Lee Jones, they probably should have left him out of MIB2 and kept Linda Fiorentino as Jay's partner. And they still could have done this story for this movie. It would actually be a better way of bringing him back than what they did in the second film.

The main reason Linda Fiorentino didn't come back was because by then she had gotten a reputation for being a diva(the commentary on Dogma goes into detail about all the problems she had with Kevin Smith) a lot of directors didn't want to deal with her, and presumably Barry Sonnenfield wrote her character out for that very reason. Also the reason why Agent Zed was killed off is because Rip Torn was arrested for drunk driving.

Just what are you referring to? I thought the movie makes it clear that
[Reveal] Spoiler:
the death of J's father]
is that moment.

I dunno, I thought this movie was enjoyable enough, and certainly worthy of the original (which I always simply considered "a fun movie" in the first place), and certainly an improvement over the bad second installment. A one-and-a-half star rating implies a level of offensiveness that I have a hard time attributing to this movie.

I was dragged along to see this today by my daughter (I stared longingly at the queue for Prometheus). Best I can say is that I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. The villain was well-devised and well-realised and Mr Brolin was note-perfect throughout. That's the good parts done with.

Apart from Boris, the CGI sucked. Apart from Brolin, the actors phoned it in. Apart from the scene in the bowling alley, the comedy was uninventive & flat. The big reveal at the end was toe-curling and answered no questions at all. And I hated the use of paint explosions to kill people with; that trick's getting old and only ever really works with red paint.

It's really not a good movie, but I'm still at a loss to explain the amount of bile it inspired in James. He's seen worse without being this vitriolic.
