Films like this give me hope that I may eventually bring Settlers of Catan or 1960: The Making of the President to the big screen.

This review contained many giggles. Giggles of the many variety.

Well i'm still excited to see this with my sister on saturday, the fact that's it similar in many aspects to Transformers is a good thing for me.

This movie has been released - and critically slated - in Europe over a month ago. What is the reason for the late U.S. release?

I love snarky reviews like this one! Reminds of my classic reviews like his skewering of "Dukes of Hazard."

When I first heard about this one being in production, my initial thought was: "Okay. We've been going on for years about Hollywood being out of ideas. But here's definite proof. What next? Operation? Candyland?"

I had no real intention of seeing this. But this pretty much clinches it.

And it looks like Operation and Candyland movies are in development although if this one bombs, Hollywood might became reluctant to go forward with them.

Candyland could work as a movie if they get someone like Tim Burton to direct it. If could bring a darkly-comedic, off-center spin to the concept like he allegedly did for Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

I'm holding out for Snakes and Ladders.

The one time where Hollywood got it right (or at least decent) with a movie based on a board game is "Clue" (1985).

Its made $215 mill overseas so far. Probably unlikely to hit that number here.

Maybe the studio thought it would create buzz(Avengers hype got even more here after a week of playing abroad)

And May is a good time for boxoffice here, movies make a lot more in this month than in April on average.

A movie called 'Lol' isn't already proof enough? Perhaps the Abba mentality of naming their songs after English Language catchphrases is leaking over into movies. Or, even worse, maybe the cycle of memes coming from movies will circle round to movies being named after memes We do live in a society that likes to recycle, after all!

I wouldn't bet on this film bombing, it's already made over 200 million overseas, so it's not much of a stretch to assume it'll make a killing domestically as well.

Also there's at least 3 films with the title LOL.

Thanks for taking another one for the team, JB. I guess Brooklyn Decker isn't quite THAT hot, though maybe Kate Upton would have been...

I do wonder why Rihanna, of all people, was cast in this movie. Whoever said she can act?

When I heard that they were making a movie base on Battleship, I thought, "What can they do to make a movie out of that?". When I heard it would be an alien invasion flick, I thought, "Well, it'll be dumb, but maybe it'll be dumb fun" but sadly it doesn't sound like the fun part's there.

From the moment I saw the first trailer, reviews like JB's were the kind I was expecting. And I for one have no intention of seeing this garbage. It looks like a video game without he controller. And hasn't the alien invasion thing been done to death?

I enjoy an action packed blockbuster, provided there's a story or at least some likable characters worth caring about. That's the reason why The Avengers worked so well; it was a joy to see these comic book legends interact, mostly due to the strong script they had to work with. Everything I've heard so far says this movie is absolutely empty.

$125m is not an impressive haul abroad for this type of heavily advertised movie. They likely released it overseas first to try and rake in as much cash as possible, Green Lantern last year bombed big time and when released weeks later internationally word had already gotten out how bad it was and failed to do anything at the BO.

It opened over a month ago here in Australia and i've pretty much forgotten everything about it except is was mind numbing/extremely loud and Rihinna in her acting DEBUT caused some snickering in the audience. Bottom Line - James' review was being nice.

EDIT: Loved James' review btw I love when he is snarky and completely trashes a movie. Very entertaining. Kudos.

I wondered the exact same thing about Beyonce in Dreamgirls, I mean yeah she can sing, but she's not actress material at all, so I can't imagine Rihanna being any worse in that department.

Just as an aside, when was the last time any of you here have actually played the board game Battleship (it was one of my favourite games when I was a child)? And I'm curious as to whether the game is still sold in toy stores.

(I checked out on Google for the game and found that there is an online version available, but I haven't actually tried it).

I had the electronic version when I was a kid. Played that quite a bit. I also played regular Battleship a lot in an afterschool program I was in. Played often with a girl named Erin. After one game where she sank all my ships but I got her aircraft carrier and destroyer, she observed that I was good at naval warfare. Another time I played against a kid and I sank all his quickly because he put em in a row. I told him: "That's how the Japanese sunk all our battleships when they bombed Pearl Harbor."

My fave board games when I was a kid were Jenga and Clue. In fact I was considered to be the Clue champ of that afterschool program.

Just looed up Battleship on Amazon and its there. Both regular board and a few electronic versions as well.
