Bordwell is more academic and Ebert is more populist, but I find them both to be unabashedly enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/cult ... ademy.htmlA good read on the state of documentaries, highlighting some of the Academy's ridiculous oversights when it came to handing out nominations for this last year. At the very least, it alerted me to some films that have now been added to my Netflix queue.

Robert DeNiro did an interview. For anybody who knows how he is about this sort of thing, that's reason enough to click.

Wow. These behind-the-scenes photos from movies and TV shows are just incredible. In order: The Shining, Metropolis, The Empire Strikes Back, Rebel Without a Cause, Sesame Street, Requiem For a Dream, The Gate, The Birds, Rio Bravo, Alien, Ghostbusters, Superman, Mothra, Dr. Strangelove, The French Connection, Tron, The Howling, Nosferatu (the original!), Faust, The Godfather, Marathon Man, King Kong (the original!), and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Superman one is now my desktop background. It is a testament to Christopher Reeve's mastery of body language that even when you can see the rigging and the cameras, it still looks like Superman is flying over the set. http://fireballed.org/linked/2011/06/07/bts/

I love the behind-the-scenes pictures of movies. Stumbled into this one just now. Supposedly from Ain't It Cool News... Fair warning...there's a shit ton of 'em. http://aicn-bts.tumblr.com/archive

In the grand scheme of things, I think that any and all perspectives are valid. But this debate basically boils down to: "is it okay to allow people to be rude and inconsiderate to those around them, so movies and theaters can pander even more to the least common denominator". My husband recently caved in and had to allow students send texts during class as his students are such friggin addicts to the damn technology. In a well lit classroom, I suppose it can't be any more distracting than the person taking notes, but sometimes, I fear for this generation. -Jeremy

Some teachers control this by making texting part of the lesson plan, for example in my current class, my instructor would sometimes ask the class to text in votes to a survey. I'm definitely not too keen on allowing texting in theaters, i've seen a few audience members texting occasionally, it isn't that distracting and i've never seen anyone do it for the whole film, and one of the theaters I frequent is really cracking down on texters, there's a no-texting message played after the trailers and before the actual film starts to discourage it, and so far it's worked. I don't mind ads for TV shows, as long as they're played before the actual trailers start.

Bret Easton Ellis and Paul Schrader are teaming up on a movie... and it's being funded in part by movie lovers. So for anybody who's ever complained that nobody ever funds real movies anymore, this is your chance to pitch in.
