I am intrigued by this upcoming new adaptation of the old comic even though my last experience with the character in film was soured greatly by that 1995 abomination. The fact that Dredd does not take off his helmet at any point during the film is already a good sign that the creators are at least trying to remain more faithful to the character of the judge and his world. We'll see how this one turns out.

I personally enjoyed the 1995 film as I never read the comic, so I couldn't care less how "faithful" it was to the source material. I am definitely looking forward to this film though, it'll be nice to see a non-superhero comic adaption this year.

Robocop is already a fairly faithful adaptation of the Judge Dredd comic.

But we will see. I don't have a great amount of optimism for this, even though it has a 99% chance of being better than the previous Judge Dredd attempt.

Even if it had been "faithful" to the original comic, the movie was a shitfest. But that pretty much sums up any movie that is even remotely associated with Rob Schneider (with the exception of Demolition Man and 50 First Dates, which were not bad).

Well I personally think Shneider is pretty funny and i'm not the least bit ashamed to admit I laughed my ass off at both American and European Gigolo.

I have seen screen shots of the the new film and i have to say I like the look of ther armour.
It is very plausible looking, unlike the rediculous armour from Judge dredd.

I am also of the opinion that Karl Urban will make a fine Dredd. he has the build and the body structure to fill the uniform well. He can also be quite physical, ie REDS is a good example of his physicality. Wouldn't it be cool if he could get a McCoy reference into the film, Damn it Jim I'm a judge not a social Engineer.

On the matter of the previous Judge Dredd film I would say this. Alot of people feel that this film was mared by the fact the Dredd took his helmet of. This is a mute point becuase the fact that Dredd took his helmet off was the least of this film's problems. This was supposed to be a film about Judge Dredd, and he spends most of the film not being a Judge.

Also the makers of the film made a PG film based on an adults comic book charactor. This is the main reason why it didn't cross over well. The film was too kid friendly. This is why it suffered so much.
I have read that the new one is going to be a cross between A clockwork orange and Bladerunner. I would hope that the film makers take the visuals from bladerunner and the tone + content + scope from A Clockwork orange. If this is an over 18 film then it should be bale to match the comic book visuals and concepts.

I am very much looking forward to this film.

I think its going to be terrible. That giant, cartoon color helmet will put of non dredders and the people familer with him have had 30 (?) years of putting their own expectations onto the movie.

Its going to go down as badly as the prequel star wars movies did (Ok, not as bad as Jar jar)

I'm just hoping for a proper, aggressive satire with a cogent position. It can be done.

The main flaw with the original Dredd was, as you imply here, in the script. The people making it saw it as their chance to make a summer blockbuster. But they didn't want to put any real thought into Judge Dredd as a character.

According to IMDB Trivia section:

Quote:
Director Danny Cannon was so disheartened over his constant creative disputes with Sylvester Stallone that he swore he would never again work with another big-name actor. He also claimed that the final version was completely different from the script, due to the changes Stallone demanded.

Basically this confirms something I've come to suspect: Once you cast Sylvester Stallone in your movie, you are no longer in the filmmaking business, you are in the Sylvester Stallone business and he's going to be the one calling the shots. Surprisingly, he's only directed 8 of the 21 movies he's scripted. This shows that most Stallone movies are producer rather than director driven and Stallone's the one making all the decisions. I strongly suspect that this is a reason why most autuer and independent directors (aside from James Mangold who helmed Cop Land and Tarantino who offered him the role of Stuntman Mike in Death Proof) have steered clear of working with Stallone.

The Clockwork Orange/Blade Runner comment has me interested in this Dredd. That might work. The original Dredd was a ridiculous mishmash of Robocop and Blade Runner.

Robocop and Blade Runner were heavily influenced by Judge Dredd.

Interesting point about Stallone, though. The more money flows into a project (and, with Stallone at the peak of his career, money was flowing), the more compromised the original ideas will be. This is almost without exception.

Paul Schrader once said he wished that Bringing Out the Dead had been made with a fraction of its budget and a lesser-known, 20-something actor. But who can say no to more money and a bankable star?

trailer's out

so scars are supposed to make Lena Headey less hot? not working.

from the variety review, sounds promising

Quote:
Grim, gritty and ultra-violent, "Dredd" reinstates the somber brutality missing from the U.K. comicbook icon's previous screen outing, the disappointing 1995 Sylvester Stallone starrer "Judge Dredd." A reboot as drastic as Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins," this hard-R, sci-fi actioner from director Pete Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland should find an appreciative audience among serious-minded fanboys and gorehounds, while the pic's more extreme elements will likely limit its potential of crossing over to the superhero mainstream when Lionsgate releases it domestically Sept. 21.

Headey is what is known in certain circles as "Hollywood ugly", not "Ugly ugly" in the film - an example of a hot actress becoming "Ugly ugly" for a role would be Charize Theron in Monster. I also like the look of Anderson. I'm interested in checking the film out, but I take anything said in publications like Variety with a grain of salt, since they're known to be sycophants to the studios.

Sounds awesome! This film just went way up on my list.

I'm not sure I'd characterize the style of the books as somber in any sense, but I guess this is encouraging.

I think the word "depressing" works more than "somber" when it comes to the world that Judge Dredd lives and works in.

Arrrgh. It looks like they've turned this into another big dumb actioner. And why? The plot shows potential to be more than just that.
