 A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
Hi, Internet. How's it going?
My name's A.J. Hakari. You might know me from my controversial shows "2011's The Three Musketeers Wasn't That Bad" and "Yes, I Saw Angel in Training." But after years of mostly popping up on here to occasionally chat about the piles of [mostly] rotten flicks I've seen, I've decided to take the initiative and be more active amongst my cinephilic brethren here.
And what better way to do so than in the form of a good-natured movie-watching challenge? The rules are simple: throughout April, watch a movie starting with every letter of the alphabet (plus numbers). The only restrictions are that they must all be first-time viewings and be of feature length (55 minutes and above). The titles themselves should also be the generally accepted English language titles (so you'd use Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and not Wo hu cang long).
Other than that, it's free and clear. There are no prizes at stake, no achievement for reaching the goal first (if at all), other than bragging rights for being the most dedicated nerd on these boards. Plus, the real objective is to expand your horizons and explore new realms of movies just based on the titles alone.
With that...let the games begin...
# - 21 Jump Street A - Absolute Beginners B - The Bird with the Crystal Plumage C - Cave of Forgotten Dreams D - The Darkest Hour E - Easy Rider F - Fireworks (1997) G - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes H - The Hunger Games I - Into the Abyss J - The Joneses K - Kind Hearts and Coronets L - Lawrence of Arabia M - Mr. Sardonicus N - New York, I Love You O - The Old Dark House (1963) P - Patton Q - Queen of Outer Space R - 'Round Midnight S - The Swell Season T - Things to Come U - Undefeated (2011) V - Vampire Circus W - Wrath of the Titans X - X (2011) Y - You Don't Know Jack Z - Zulu

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
"Month of April?" Heck..I think I'd need 6 months or better to get a shot at 27 movies. (I got "H" last night (Hanna) but I don't think I'll be getting too far in the challenge.)

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
I'm going to give this a try with AJ in an effort to get my movie watching, and forum posting, back in order. February was slow and March was even slower for me. Hopefully, this will jump start me back into it. Too bad I saw 21 Jump Street on March 31.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
Sounds like a fun idea. I'm going to have to do some research to find some films I haven't seen yet. "Q" and "X" might be difficult!
# - 39 Steps, The A - Absence Of Malice B - Bigger Than Life / Blast Of Silence / Big Deal On Madonna Street C - Clean, Shaven / Cabin In The Woods, The D - Design For Living / Devil & Daniel Webster, The E - Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask F - Frankenstein (1931) / Fires On The Plain G - Generation, A H - Host, The I - Ivan's Childhood / In A Lonely Place J - Jigoku K - Killing Zoe L - Last Seduction, The / Letter Never Sent M - Missing / Mirror, The N - Night To Remember, A O - Outrage P - Pitfall / Pirates, The: A Band Of Misfits Q - Quiet Man, The R - Red Road / Raven, The S - Spirit Of The Beehive, The / Square, The T - Three Outlaw Samurai / Trouble In Paradise U - Ugetsu V - Viridiana W - Wise Blood X - X-Men Origins: Wolverine Y - Year Of The Horse Z - Zulu

No, those are all films I plan on watching over the next few weeks, I just found it more convenient to list them all at once.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
My list so far: (being edited)
I'm adding a one line impression of the movie as well.
# - A - B - Before the Devil Knows You're Dead -- Decent movie. I didn't think the characters were particularly interesting with the exception of Andy. C - The Cabin in the Woods -- It's a fantastic genre deconstruction/send up that makes me never want to watch a splatter movie again or see another one immediately. Worth a watch on the big screen. D - E - F - G - H - Hunger Games -- Extremely disappointing, well put together but thematically weak due to the age pandering I - Iron Man 2 --Wasn't expecting much, turned out to be a pretty entertaining superhero movie J - K - L - M - N - Nausica Valley of the Wind -- Cried twice. Not the best Miyazaki but pretty high tier Miyazaki which means it's damn brilliant O - P - The Perfect Host -- Pretty entertaining genre bender. I don't want to give its twists away but I found it hilarious & disturbing Q - R - Rango --Edgier than I expected, quite entertaining S - T - U - V - W - X - Y - Z -

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
I need an official ruling on a couple of questions.
1. I'll be finishing Three Outlaw Samurai at some point today. Should this go in the "#" section or the "T" section?
2. I picked up A Night To Remember from the library. "N" or "A"?

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
1) That'd be a "T" -- "#" goes for stuff like 2012, 12 Angry Men, or 10,000 B.C.2) You've got yourself an "N" flick there, good sir.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
that was a first time viewing? with all the movies you've seen, surprised it took that long to get to Lawrence.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
It is, indeed. I actually even started it back in December, but I got sidetracked with work, the holidays, and the fact that it's really effing long. But this week, I decided to resume my quest to finish all the Best Picture winners I haven't seen yet (nine more to go), and this was first up.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
I'm pretty sure I have the best N movie. I've outlined movies I plan to see in those weird brackets.
# - A - B - C - Change Nothing D - E - F - G - H - I - Incendies J - K - Kiss Me Deadly L - M - N - Napoleon (1927) O - Of Gods and Men P - Pi Q - The Queen R - S - O Sangue T - U - United 93 V - W - X - Y - Z -
I probably won't get very far, but there's no harm in trying.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
Well, having finished Patton this morning, that list is down to 8. Otherwise, I still need to see Dances with Wolves, Oliver!, The Last Emperor, Out of Africa, Kramer vs. Kramer, Gandhi, Ordinary People, and Terms of Endearment.

 Re: A.J.'s Alphabetic Movie Challenge
I just watched this at the end of March and liked it a bunch. What'd you think? It's one of the few movies I've ever seen that starts out as pure allegory and then explicitly reveals its subtext by the end of the movie. It sounds like it would be a huge mistake, but I thought it worked in the movie. Plus, the sadistic, dumb take on the noir private eye was pretty damn cool, too.

I haven't seen Oliver! But, to save you some trouble: Gandhi, Kramer Vs. Kramer, and The Last Emperor are films you can see once and never really have to see again. Ordinary People is OK. Dances With Wolves, Out Of Africa, and Terms of Endearment are really shitty.
