In like Jonny Flynn! Anyone think The Artist is going to be upset tonight? Unlikely, I know, but what movies have a shot?

Last year I did absolutely terrible with my predictions, but this time I tried to keep my personal feelings from influencing my choices. I think I'm going to do better this year.

I don't see THE ARTIST being upset, but if you're looking for a longshot, try THE HELP or THE DESCENDANTS. It would be a monumental shock for anything other than THE ARTIST to win Best Picture.

Re: Response thread - Berardinelli's live Oscar night commentary
I think this is the first time I've ever watched the red carpet. It's also the first February I've been married.
I miss when it was Artist vs. Hugo (or was that never a real thing?). If it's those three, James, then man go The Artist. Based on pre-show interviews alone, now rooting for Jean Dujardin. Cinnabon 1, France 0.
In other news, NICK NOLTE IS MY SPIRIT GUIDE.

Even if The Artist doesn't win, it's unwise to bet against it.

I don't watch the red carpet, but my wife does. Actually, she's *trying* to watch the red carpet while chasing around trying to keep the two-year old out of trouble.

I'm afraid you're too right. American cinema is about to be set back 80 years.

Same here. Except, I thought the show started at 8. My 11:20-something Best Picture announcement is looking pretty stupid right now.

Hey Pedro, what is your logic on Hugo for Art Direction. If Artist wins best picture, how could it not get art direction?

Ok, Billy Crystal montage. Let the Oscars drinking game begin.

Those two aren't really related. Part internal logic, part exhibited trends, part guild awards, part what others have proposed.

I like the stage design this year, it's a lot less flashy than last year. The million Swarovski crystals were a little much.

Wow, Hugo took cinematography. There goes my ballot.

Re: Response thread - Berardinelli's live Oscar night commentary
I got one of those right. Not sure many were picking Hugo for cinematography.
Good start for Martin Scorcese's film, although I still think most of the film's wins are going to be technical.

Two for Hugo. Will this be Scorcese's night?

Re: Response thread - Berardinelli's live Oscar night commentary
Opening was fun, right? Nothing fantastic, but breezy.
Hugo for Cinematography...as much as I like Hugo I'm not a fan of this win. More digital animation than I like in this category. It's like when Avatar won for cinematography, just not as bad.
And...Hugo for Art Direction. A sign that Hugo is going to blow up, or merely that things are going as expected i.e. Hugo will do well in a bunch of technical categories but The Artist will sweep the major awards?

I'd keep an eye on costume design and editing.

Re: Response thread - Berardinelli's live Oscar night commentary
Yeah, it seems like the Academy is partial to the 3D cinematography thing. I still think that The Tree of Life had much better cinematography overall. Also, I hope you're right about Hugo vs The Artist. I wouldn't be disappointed if Hugo won I guess... Totally screws my ballot though... The Artist winning costume design was surprising. I think that was the only one I didn't have it winning. I'm 2 for 4.
