My girlfriend made me watch Titanic again on Sunday. I noticed that the motif from that song that recurs through the film works really, really well.

That song was actually on VH1's 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever List, and oh boy did it deserve it! I kinda like Celine, but I HATE that song!

In honor of what day it is:

"I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher in Groundhog Day

"The Promise" by When In Rome in Napolean Dynamite (closing credits)

"Forever Young" by Alphaville in Napolean Dynamite (at the school dance)

"Under Pressure" by Queen in Grosse Pointe Blanke (Cusack staring into that smiling baby's face and realizing pure innocence and of the time he's lost)

"Live and Let Die" by McCartney / Guns and Roses in Grosse Pointe Blank - Funny transition from Cusack's rage to the Muzak version of the song when he walks into the convenience store

"We Are The Champions" by Queen...geez...pick a movie...I'll go with Revenge of the Nerds

"A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who from Rushmore "You are forgiven!"

"Moving in Stereo" by The Cars in Fast Times At Ridgemont High...come on...how can you NOT think of that scene?

Great call!
BTW: since this thread surfaced again: Just a few words about "My Heart Will Go On": yep, I agree: the motif (or parts of the melody), appearing throughout the movie's musical score, work just fine, BUT the way they are assembled and completed to make a 90s adult pop ballad: simply awful: totally uneven (check how the A parts are "stalling" at times) with really poor harmonization and (then) badly dated music production. Definitely a hack job done in very few time. The CD version is a little more refined (but not much) and complete than what you can hear at the end credits.

The ONLY way to use motifs or "bits and pieces" from a fully developed theme, sprinkled throughout the dramatic score is by working backwards = first you write the complete theme, then you pick the parts you sprinkle in. The true master of this is (of course) John Williams. For example: parts of the "Love Theme" are used as B-parts in the opening "Superman March" - he even manages to combine two melodic lines (or more) into one cue (or theme) as counterpoint (= two different melodies superimposed and they work perfectly together). James Horner ain't no composer of pop ballads and he ain't No John Williams either.

Yep: that awful Céline Dion tune had tons of success. So did "The Hangover Part 2". I rest my case.

Great musical cue. Wes Anderson's use of 'Hey Jude' (with abrubt cut-off) in The Royal Tenenbaums was equally pleasing.

Really any music cue in The Royal Tenenbaums is excellent.

That is indeed one of Williams' great talents. Not only does he develop his motives with a purpose in mind--a major key march for the hero, a string theme for the romantic stuff, etc.--but he's also very good at subverting and repurposing those themes.

Superman is a good example. When his heart is breaking and he flies back in time to rescue Lois Lane, the cue is uptempo and action-packed, but Williams doesn't use the march. He uses the less obvious love theme.

Another good example is the Force theme in Star Wars. It makes a very memorable entrance in the scene with the double sunrise, brimming with unrealized dreams. But it comes back again and again throughout the movie, signifying impending tragedy, determination, spiritual calm, and celebration. And that's not counting all the times it comes back in the other five movies. Maybe just as much as the opening march, the Force theme binds Star Wars together.

Well looks like we agree on a lot of things regarding music. That's most likely because they are true. I had the grat pleasure working with Michael Rendish (Teacher and dear friend of Howard Shore's). I learned tons of stuff - and your understanding of the material surprises me.
Hey: anyone thinking I'm licking Ken's ass. Feel free to go ahead. I couldn't care less. Fuck you!
Sorry to bring this up: Some guys in these Forums are highly articulate, and seem to know a lot about the true philosohpy of movies. But I can write for a symphony orchstra and I did it several times (no matter if it's mediocre or not, but I can and it works). Anyone alse here can? Oh: and I have a Berklee Master certificate with straight A's all the way through.
Some of you guys might be cooler than I am - but do you really know you know shit except your own opinion, influenced by what makes you look cool - being afraid of being bullied? I pitty you.
Call me a frustrated old guy (that's what I am) but don't expect me to believe in some of the BS flying these days....

Naw. It actually did come from these Forums. I'm getting tired of people whacking off while making the world believe they are too smart for this world. I might not be that smart, but I get stuff done. Actually stuff I coinsider real good. I'm a hands-on guy. I devoted my time gathering skills to get stuff done - not to convince others that I can do it. That's for smarmy salesman. I'd rather do stuff than convincing people how smart I am. Doesn't seem ro fly around here. As I can see.
I'ts rather frustratng how people here brag about what they know. But it wasn't knowledege and smartness which build the world. Smartness ist great to cover your ass. It needs courage, taking risks and knowing your own limitations and hard work (not the "I know it all already" - attitude) to get stuff done und to truly build something useful which lasts. Cool attitude come a long way in the school yard and college dorm. But the willingness to get stuff done will actually get it done.
I'm not sure how much longer I am willing to take the pissing contest which is going on here. I guess I'll wait some more time and if the dick length comparison keeps going for much longer. I'm outtra here.

Thanks foir asking.

This was great stuff. As someone who has definitely used attitude to mask deficiencies, I get nervous whenever someone gets close to finding the limits of my knowledge/abilities/so on. There are people here who know film, understand the grammar and can make short work of any argument. I'm envious of those who do it so passionately. I cannot; I'm not particularly knowledgeable about film but I am certainly a fan. That's really the only requirement for participation on these forums.

I know what it's like to get sick of these forums -- I've bolted for a few months many times over the past three years -- but I'm hopeful that the core will stick around. And, although I am both a little pretentious and a lot narcissistic, I know I've been responsible for helping some people get sick of these forums.

So, I hope you continue to contribute and don't throw in any towels. Your stuff is persuasive.

Oh...I know where this tirade would come about on certain threads within the forum, but on this particular thread ("Songs in Movies"), it seemed out of left field. There were some pretty good meaningless arguments going on in the "Defense of George Lucas" Reelthoughts thread where I would've expected to see something like this....the "Songs in Movies" seemed quite amicable to this point. I was just curious if you'd seen something in this thread to set you off that I missed.

Naw, not here. I just had to agree with Ken. Some people (in fact, many) either don't reply to him or disagree with him.
I just reached the point where I can't stand the college boy attitue anymore, complete with, admittedly skilled, hints about their own genius. I know where my place in the social pyramid is. Neither low nor high. I never made any fuzz about that. Of course: my "I am here to learn" attitude is 100% honest, and yes I also use it as a shield to avoid subtle and skilled attacks. And of course my "just my ramblings" bottom lines are a defense - but they are also really meant like this.
If I show some attitude once in a while, that's because I feel it's about time.
I even don't care that much about some "stage acting and dancing" filled with highly skilled, but in the end nonsensical, poetry, It's a monologue after all. My problem boils down to elitism and being looked down on. May it be directly (reply) or indirectly (those wammabes). This Forums had seen more than enough of this. There are Forums out there which are even more elitist and aggresive. But that's just wanking. At least there still is some kind of dialog here.

I totally understand where Threeperf is coming from. It's the main reason I rarely post anymore. Even lurking gets me pissed off. I won't mention any names...

This is kind of a strange turn of events. Of all the online communities I've been a part of, this is definitely one of the wubbier ones. Yeah, there's some petty sniping once in a while, and Ragnarok and I have clashed lightsabers a couple times on the subject of a certain epic space opera, but otherwise it's a pleasant little sewing circle we have here.

I'm glad Threeperf agrees with me on this subject because he knows his shit about music. I have a little bit of musicious edumacation myself, but I don't compare to his expertise.

I also want to put up a retroactive disclaimer right now. I tend to have two modes: blathering on and on about something I care about deeply, and making stupid jokes that are occasionally obscured by stupid irony that maybe only I (with my stupid sense of humor) find funny. Either way, I am a shameless doofus. When in doubt, just assume that I haven't taken my daily dose of brain medicine.

Syreeta's "Harmour Love" from the beginning of Junebug. I had that in my head for weeks.
The various songs set to "Take Me Home, Country Roads" from Whisper of the Heart, climaxing with a really moving one in the center of the movie.
