Straw man. I didn't say you were wrong. I said that "dull" is a nothing criticism, meaning that there's no actual critical element. A non-analytical statement.

The portion of your post that takes the time to examine your impression of the movie--the critical part, in other words--was the part about Jack's performance. That's the part that I addressed, because while I disagree, it's fair enough. Even Spielberg has admitted that it bugged him at first, until he reached some understanding of what Nicholson and Kubrick were getting at.

Yeah, I don't see how you can really call any of his films from Paths of Glory through A Clockwork Orange "lesser". They're all well-known, critically well regarded fims.

*Sighs* Does anyone actually read what I wrote? I even put lesser in quotation marks for God's sake. Anyway, here's my initial post. For the third time.

So if I can exclude the "great movies" period Kubrick had between 1964 and 1971 with A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, and 2001, what are we left with? What's the best of the rest?

Now I know my distinction here is somewhat arbitrary, but I want to shift the conversation away from the Kubrick "usual suspects."

The Shining, hands down.
