Although not directly applicable to the topic, didn't Crispin Glover win a lawsuit for using using a CGI gnerated McFly in Back to the Future 2 without his permission? So if we use that as a precedent, I would imagine CGI boobs would need the blessings of the actress.

This might result in another scenario that the actresses could use: Give me a higher salary and i will bare it, but no permission to use CGI :-)

Let's also not forget the topless polaroid of Mila Kunis in Forgetting Sarah Marshall--they 'shopped her head onto a body double for that one.

It was archive footage of Glover in BttF II, not CGI.....and this was in 1989 so a CGI Crispin Glover would've looked like utter crap.

I know there have been news stories recently on how ads and magazine covers featuring Julia Roberts and Kate Middleton have been airbrushed.

Good to see James writing a new Reelthought about a topic he's passionate and knowledgeable about: movie nudity. If the Gods exist I hope that they bless him for it.

When I saw The Change-Up it was at advanced screening before news of this CGI nudity came out. So suffice to say, I was severely disappointed to learn that the nudity in the movie was fake. And saddened by this too. :(

Didn't know that about Alba in Machete either. Also disappointing but also odd since her arms were strategically placed to cover her breasts. If she wasn't even naked, why bother covering them?

IIRC, Julie Andrews got all non-essential personnel to leave the set before filming a topless scene. So, here's another aspect: some actresses don't mind millions of people seeing them nude in the cinema or on television, but object to it on the set, even though people there probably don't see as much detail.

Just to make sure James's thoughts are purely cinematically motivated, we are looking for a write-up on male nudity in film.

There have been a lot of questions about Dirk's diggler in BOOGIE NIGHTS...

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I hold A-list Hollywood actresses to a different viewpoint than I do for B-list actresses and porn actresses. When I watch Helen Mirren in a film, I don't watch to see her nude, I watch to see her put in a good performance. Ditto for other major actresses, for the most part, as I know that some A-listers are up there for reasons other than acting ability (eg: Jessica Alba). I don't watch mainstream films to see actresses like Olivia Wilde strip. So to me, the idea of them using body doubles and/or CGI effects to avoid actually having to bare themselves is meaningless and doesn't detract from my enjoyment of a film/show that they appear in.

Being that 90% of movies is fake these days anyways (CGI sky replacement, color correction, virtual environments, virtual stunt doubles etc....), CGI fake tits seems perfectly logical.

I can imagine a hilarious future where A-list male actors are fitted with digital schlongs and then try to claim that they are real :)

I am going to miss body doubles though as they can be a good source of Ed Wood style entertainment. They didn't even try to hide the fact that Elisha Cuthbert's character's boobs belonged to a double in "He Was a Quiet Man".

I'm conflicted about this whole issue as well. I don't see CGI nudity becoming a crazy fad like 3D because a lot of actresses will probably still be afraid that if the CGI is done well, people will think she actually was naked. And isn't the point of a no-nudity clause not to be seen naked?

CGI is no different from airbrushing in that it's visual trickery. But I admit, there is a certain thrill in knowing for sure that a well-known actress is going to bare all and that it is ACTUALLY her. I admit, we guys love it, but nudity all by itself isn't porn. It can be sexy without being sexual.

This seems like a good time to re-mention that most tears are CG too. The practice started a few years ago and has become very popular.

The articles in Playboy were/are certainly a great read. :)

James, did you really write this article? I'm all for discussing the naked and the nude (there is a massive difference, incidentally) however I personally don't find it a pressing matter in the world of cinema.

Anyway to answer the issue... perhaps I'd begin by putting my foot down and saying that opposing nudity does not equate to prudishness. As far as I'm concerned, there always has and always will be a fine line between tasteful and distasteful. Knowing this line is what separates us from rodents.

On a lighter note, it does amuse me when we're led to believe that a woman's chest looks the same way it does uncovered as it does when wearing a bra!

"it boggles the mind why a filmmaker would want to cover up nudity" - I can think of several reasons :P

Sex and physical attraction are two of the most universal elements of the human experience. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either of them. At some times in history, this is reflected in contemporary art, and sometimes not.

With exceptions few and far in between, we don't seem to be in one of those times. If I can't call it prudishness, I don't know what to call it.

Question - what is the difference between a person in their underwear and a person wearing nothing? Discuss.

I, on the other hand, think it's a very interesting topic. Not the nudity discussion itself (though I have no problems with that either) but the very fact that the technology has improved to the point where some people cannot tell the difference between a real breast and a CG breast. He's also touched upon some of the ethical questions with using the technology. Is it alright to do CG nudity without an actor's permission?

I wonder if this type of CG will start creeping into the adult film industry. It's probably not mature enough to be used at present, but who knows how realistic it would look in a year or two?
