Let's have a little fun. Here's my "should win" ballot. This will probably score a lot fewer points than my official ballot. No props for beating this one - it's just an indication of how politicized the Oscars are (in my opinion, of course).

Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity)

LEAD ACTOR:
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)

Post Re: Beat Berardinelli: 2014 Edition
As I'm sure everyone is aware, I swept the board so there's no way to win "Beat Berardinelli."

Sorry about that. The intention wasn't to create a contest that was unwinnable. Until about 11:30, I never believed I could score a perfect 38 out of 38. Haven't come close to that before. I'll post a few thoughts about that later.

At any rate, scores on the whole were up this year. Seven contestants scored 36/38, each missing only one category. Six of those seven missed "Documentary." One missed "Original Screenplay." Those were the two categories in which there was the most uncertainty about who would win.

"Documentary" fouled up the most contestants. Not counting me, only seven people got it right.

The seven who scored 36 were: fatcat71, Grant, peng, aleggo, papablue62, kamal_b83, Thom20. Applying the tie-breaker (Best Picture officially announced at 11:57), we have a "runner up" tie between fatcat71 and Thom20, both of whom were off by 2 minutes (in either direction). So, although they don't win anything, they can claim bragging rights.

As for the prize... I still have to write a review for LAST YEAR'S WINNER (The request was for "Following," and that will appear shortly). Snow shoveling has cut into my spare time the last couple of months. I have lost about 15 hours to unexpected manual work and 15 hours equates to about three video reviews or 7 ReelThoughts. After "Following," I need to review "12 Angry Men" (requested by last year's "How Well Do You Know James?" contest winner). Then I'll pick something I have always wanted to review but never got around to reviewing. It may *not* be a good film. Something offbeat. I've always been intrigued by the idea of writing a "straight" review of a porn film. That would read like a parody. I'll think about it.

I may need to tweak the rules next year to ensure that a win is possible.
