Thanks for the efforts, Pedro.

I assumed Shailene Woodley was getting attention because movie nerds had a crush they wanted to better justify (kind of like how Kristen Stewart was discussed as if she had any raw acting talent) but maybe not.

Very exciting. Great work putting it all together.

I love seeing the acting nominations for Short Term 12.

Extremely thrilled about Hunger Games for writing and Oblivion for Art Direction.

Inside Llewyn Davis had enough support for Best Actor and Best Picture, but not Best Original Screenplay? Interesting.

Until the last few ballots, Her was going to be the sole nominee for Best Original Screenplay, which... that would have been interesting, too. One of these years, that's going to happen with one of the lesser categories.

I wouldn't think best original screenplay was a lesser category. Costume design has four nominees, even best art direction has three. Her must have been #1 on everyone's ballot.

This is the End for best visual effects?! WTF?!!

Although I'm glad Shailene Woodley was nominated, it's a shame her costar, Miles Teller, wasn't nominated since the movie wouldn't have been half the movie it is if it weren't for him. An incredible unsung performance.

Too much love for This is the End. Overrated movie IMO. But in general, I got no beef with these nominations even though only a small handful of mine got through.

just remember: friends don't let friends vote Gravity for Best Cinematography.

So PM your votes to me as soon as possible. I'm not setting an due date right now because I'm going to be in LA for a few days next week, but if I get enough votes before I leave, I'll make the winners presentation then. I'd like to get at least sixteen, though I realize that might be reaching a bit at this point.

When you send me your Hall of Fame nominations, please select up to ten names. (I'd prefer you to select ten, else the ballot will get increasingly crowded.) Those with 75% of the vote or more will be inducted to the ReelViews Hall of Fame.

I'm working hard to watch enough so I can enter this year.

Managed to score Gravity, Her and 12 Years a Slave.

Don't ask!

I thought we weren't supposed to consider 'Gravity' for best cinematography, were we?

How does this work? I just PM my vote to Pedro, right? One vote per category (other than Hall of Fame)?

While I would have liked Nebraska to have more nominations (even Dern and Payne missed out, huh), these are pretty cool. Great to see Pacific Rim get the technical nods it should have received from that other awards show.

Pedro wrote:

You know what's also really interesting? Three other Best Picture nominees featured original screenplays, so it's not as if the only good 2013 films all had adapted screenplays. Could that be an overrated category?

Other observations:

Fruitvale Station only received 1 nomination, but it was for Best Picture! The big one as it were. Doesn't usually happen for other major film awards.

I love that we aren't forced to have 5 noms in each category, so if the year stank in one(e.g. the Picture subcategories) we don't have to nominate say, The Croods to fill it out, and vice versa. Great example of a strong field this year is Best Actor, and even some worthy performances didn't make the cut. Which leads to...

Most likely backlash victim: Matthew McConaughey. Call it the "How could he be an Oscar winner and Leo still isn't?" backlash. Second most likely: American Hustle

Most intriguing (silly) question: Who can legitimately judge Blue Is the Warmest Color in the screenplay category, since it's in French? Or is it cool to consider the subtitles as their own screenplay? Related thought...

Most likely beneficiary of a "reverse Oscar backlash" if you will: Blue Is the Warmest Color, with Prisoners and Inside Llewyn Davis close behind.

Most pleasant surprise: The World's End nominated for Best Acting Ensemble!! Sweet! Might even get my vote since most of my top 5 didn't make it.

The "Thank you, fellow ReelViews forum posters, for correcting a dumb oversight on my nom ballot" award: Philip Seymour Hoffman for Hall of Fame. That is just perfect! That oversight deserves a face palm on my part.

I just reordered my Netflix queue to try to catch a couple films that I really should see in order to be an informed voter, but we'll see if I have enough time. Llewyn releases to DVD on Tuesday, and I haven't seen that one yet...

Correct.

You're allowed to vote for it, but it was asked that you be discerning about your choices. Most people didn't include it, but some did, and if I recall correctly one person even put it as their number one choice.

You know, this looks like it might be a regular thing with us. Last year, Perfect Sense got a Best Picture nomination without having anything else attached to it. I can totally see it happening again.

Here are the ones who were close but no cigar:
~Prisoners for Best Picture
~Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor, Dallas Buyers Club
~Mads Mikkelson for Best Actor, The Hunt
~Short Term 12 for Best Adapted Screenplay
~Inside Llewyn Davis for Best Original Screenplay
~Fruitvale Station for Best Original Screenplay
~Prisoners for Best Original Screenplay
~The World's End for Best Original Screenplay
~Despicable Me 2 for Best Animated Film
~The Great Gatsby for Best Art Direction
~The Grandmasters for Best Cinematography
~Her for Best Film Editing
~Lone Survivor for Best Sound
~Jared Leto and Jennifer Lawrence weren't that close.
~Side Effects and The Place Beyond the Pines appeared in several categories by several different people, but no one loved it enough for it to make much of an impression anywhere.
~Drug War for Best Foreign Language Film, Disconnect for Best Ensemble Cast, and Antiviral for Best Make-Up all had two first place votes, which gets you closer to a nomination than you think.

I guess you could argue I could have rounded out the original screenplay category with a combination of the four listed above, but fuck it, we collectively didn't like them enough. Them's the breaks. I'm sorry if that's a problem, but I'm not going to change it now. For what it's worth, Inside Llewyn Davis was a hair away from a nomination. All it needed was a fifth place vote. Maybe if I received another vote or two, things would have been different.

Damn missed out on the nomination process this year

These nominations just get more interesting each year. Surprised with the 12 nominations for 12 Years A Slave. I predict another split between best picture and director again. Apparently a split between picture and director is our norm.

I already voted people, so come on guys

Like a venereal disease in a fraternity house, I thought that a Best Cinematography nom for Gravity might avoid our humble little room in the movie awards season, but it somehow snuck in anyway.

There. Look what you guys did. You made Pedro get all passive-aggressive. Is that what you want? You want Pedro to become our Jewish mother? We already have Mark, you know.

^Until Ken finds a nice girl with whom he can listen to StarTalk. He's got things to offer: a college degree, his health. He's still young but it would be nice if he was just a little less a loner, more a mensch. He's got things to offer, he just needs to get on JDate and find someone who will listen. All that time on a forum. And for what? But he's a good boy. Just like his doctor brother.

*checks nomination ballot and hangs head in shame*

I'm afraid I haven't seen a lot of the final nominees. I guess I just won't vote, or can I just vote in the categories where I have some level of knowledge?

If it helps, I abstained from voting in a couple of the categories where I either hadn't seen the movies or wouldn't vote for something that I felt was mediocre.

Yeah if I hadn't seen BITWC a couple weeks ago I wouldn't have been able to vote for Foreign Language Picture in good conscience.

I abstained in a few categories myself.

I also abstained the hell out of my favorite pair of underwear.

You heard me.
