Avatar is no better or worse than MANY previous winners. Titanic, Gladiator, English Patient. Its just the type of move that wins Best Picture.

Personally, I think The Hurt Locker is a bit overrated. It was a good movie, but I wasn't captivated. These types of movies are just sad in a way that makes you hate everything and everyone.

For my money, Inglorious Basterds is the most creative movie in the list of 10. I have a place in my heart for Up in the Air but its not winning. But Avatar is just the type of movie that wins these awards, esp given what it is going to be doing for the industry 3D wise in the future.

I'll say it once again... Max & Mary was the best movie of the year, and Fantastic Mr Fox was far more creative and adult than Up.

Keanu Reeves for THE HURT LOCKER. I understand the Bigelow connection, but couldn't they have gotten someone bigger? Will Schwarzenegger introduce AVATAR?

I don't.

Does Keanu Reeves have a sore throat or something? He sounded kind of weird.

QT looks and sounds like he is ready to get the fuck out of there. Good for him.

Gross political verbal masturbation coming up, AKA Sean Penn.

I think Avatar will win because although The Hurt Locker is most certainly superior, the Academy is not about to support a film all the way about an unpopular war. Interested more in fantasy, not in reality. If they are interested in reality they will give it to Precious or The Blind Side, because that is more acceptable and popular. People risking their lives in Afghanistan isn't.

I consider that to be a substantive award personally since it's acknowledging a film and not just some technical aspects of that film.

Wow, I guess we broke the server!

Anyway, I rather like the tributes to the actor/actress nominees by friends. A bit long, but more personal.

Too many users on the forums caused a crash of the entire database, so here (for posterity's sake) is what was missed:

Post #13 (11:38 pm EST):

Award #17: Best Foreign Language Film - THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES [12/17]- I don't think anyone expected this. And I don't think anyone in this country has seen it.

Acceptance speech: ** out of ****

Award #18: Best Actor – Jeff Bridges [13/18]

Acceptance speech: ** out of **** - Soaking it in. The speech started out nice, but then the thank yous started and it just went on and on and on. Is there anyone he didn't thank?

I suspected The Secret of Their Eyes would win based on my thinking that White Ribbon and A Prophet would cancel each other out, just like last year when Waltz with Bashir and The Class were thought to be the front runners and Departures swooped in and won.

The Dude abides!

Oh and if The Hurt Locker wins, can we at least retroactively give LA Confidential the Oscar?
